BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Boston University and Lehigh have alternated winning Patriot League Tournament titles since the Terriers joined the league in 2014. The two teams have met in the championship round of the league tournament the last two years and will meet in their regular season series this weekend at Leadership Park as the Mountain Hawks close out a 10-game home stand.
Lehigh and BU will play a doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon and a single game Sunday, also starting at noon. All three games will be streamed on the Patriot League Network.
The Mountain Hawks (11-19) are coming off a doubleheader split with Saint Joseph's on Wednesday. Lehigh won the opener 6-1 but let a one-run lead get away in the seventh inning of game two, ultimately falling 6-5. Freshman Jaelynn Chesson had four doubles over the two games, while classmate Addie Kittel had four hits and three RBIs in the doubleheader. Freshman Melissa Fedorka also had a good day, with two hits, including an opposite field home run in game one and a RBI ground out in game two.
Lehigh is currently 2-5 on this home stand with Chesson (9-for-19, four RBIs), freshman Karsen O'Rourke (6-for-13, three RBIs) and Kittel (7-for-22, three RBIs) leading the way offensively.
With her four-hit doubleheader yesterday, Chesson continues to pace the Mountain Hawks in most offensive categories. She is batting .419 with 36 hits, 14 runs scored, nine doubles, four home runs and 16 RBIs.
In the pitcher's circle, both junior Parker Boyd and freshman Gabriella Nori struck out eight in complete game efforts Wednesday. Boyd earned the win in game one allowing just one run, while Nori allowed just two earned runs in game two as Lehigh was hurt by three errors.
Lehigh is 3-3 in Patriot League play. The Mountain Hawks swept Lafayette on the road in the opening weekend of league play, but were swept by Bucknell at home last weekend in the first-ever sweep suffered by Lehigh in a series of three or more games. Since BU joined the Patriot League in 2014, Lehigh has won tournament titles in 2015 and 2017. The Mountain Hawks reached the championship round of last year's tournament before bowing out against the host Terriers.
Boston University enters the weekend at 18-15 overall and 3-0 in the Patriot League. The Terriers have won five straight games, including a three-game sweep of Holy Cross in BU's league-opening series last weekend. On Wednesday, Boston University rallied for a 3-2 win over Boston College, thanks to Emily Morrow's walk-off triple in the seventh inning.
Morrow is the Terriers' top hitter at .340, while catcher Alex Heinen is the top run-producer and on-field leader. Heinen, the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week, has seven home runs and 23 RBIs to go along with a .284 average.
The Terriers are also strong in the circle, led by Patriot League Pitcher of the Year, Ali DuBois, who is off to another strong start with a 13-6 record, 1.49 ERA and 120 strikeouts. Freshman Emily Gant gives BU a formidable No. 2 pitcher. Gant is 4-7 with a 2.16 ERA and also plays the field when she doesn't pitch.
BU has won league titles in 2014, 2016 and 2018 and was picked first in the preseason.
The all-time series between Lehigh and Boston University is tied at 11-11. Last year in Boston, Lehigh won the regular season series opener, then dropped the next two games. BU then beat Lehigh in the final round of the Patriot League Tournament. Lehigh went 5-1 against Boston University two years ago, sweeping the regular season series and then defeating the Terriers twice on the final day of the Patriot League Tournament.
Following this weekend's series, Lehigh will visit Rider for a non-league doubleheader Wednesday before hosting Army West Point for three games April 13-14.
