BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After a week in which she threw 19.1 scoreless innings, including the program's first no-hitter in nearly four years, Lehigh senior Emily Sorem was named Patriot League Pitcher of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. Sorem came into the week having thrown just 29.2 innings on the season, but threw complete game shutouts in both of her starts last week and added a win in relief, capping a 4-1 weekend for the Mountain Hawks.
The award is the first of the season for Sorem and the fourth of her career.
Sorem's week began with a complete-game three-hit shutout in Lehigh's 6-0 win in game two at Seton Hall on Wednesday, a victory that was the 800th in Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan's career. She walked four and struck out seven against the Pirates as Lehigh split the doubleheader.
In Saturday's second game at Holy Cross, the Tigard, Ore., native tossed nine hitless innings allowing a pair of walks, while striking out one, as a two-run single by junior Lexi van Ooyen gave Lehigh the 2-0 victory and a doubleheader sweep. The no-hitter is the 14th in program history and the first since Christine Campbell no-hit Colgate over five innings in 2015. Sorem's no-hitter was also the first to cover nine or more innings in program history.
Sorem picked up her third win of the weekend in Sunday morning's series finale at Holy Cross, tossing 3.1 innings of two-hit, scoreless relief as Lehigh erased an early deficit to win 8-7 and sweep the crucial league series.
Over 19.1 innings, Sorem allowed no runs on five hits with seven walks and eight strikeouts.
For the season, Sorem lowered her ERA from 6.84 to 4.14. She is now 4-2 and has had a hand in four of Lehigh's six shutouts this season. All three of her victories this season prior to Sunday's relief win were complete game shutouts.
The 4-1 showing last week improved Lehigh's record to 22-25. The sweep of Holy Cross leaves Lehigh tied with Colgate for third place in the Patriot League standings at 8-7. The Mountain Hawks need just one win over the Raiders this weekend in Hamilton to secure a Patriot League Tournament berth.
Before Lehigh sets its sights on Colgate, the Mountain Hawks will travel to Villanova Wednesday for a single game beginning at 3 p.m. from the Villanova Softball Complex.
While Sorem provided stability in the circle, freshman Jaelynn Chesson continued to lead Lehigh at the plate, batting .400 (8-for-20) over the five games last week with five doubles and five RBIs. Chesson went 3-for-4 with three doubles in Sunday's series finale at Holy Cross to tie a school single game record. She continues to lead Lehigh in nearly all offensive categories including batting average (.373), doubles (15), home runs (four) and RBIs (26). Chesson is also tied for the team lead with 53 hits and 18 runs scored.
Van Ooyen matched Chesson with five RBIs over five games last week, highlighted by her go-ahead single in game two at Holy Cross.
A 7-for-8 week with three runs scored has lifted freshman Carley Barjaktarovich over the .300 mark for the season. At .304, Barjaktarovich joins Chesson and junior Mary-Hannah Smith as Mountain Hawks hitting over .300 on the season.
Villanova is 26-22 overall and 8-7 in Big East action. The Wildcats are coming off a series at St. John's in which they won just one of three games.
Paige Rauch paces the Villanova offense with a .415 batting average, 14 home runs and 43 RBIs. She has also been the top pitcher for the Wildcats, going 11-11 with a 2.74 ERA across 133 innings with 127 strikeouts.
Villanova leads the all-time series 28-22 and there have been two ties. The Mountain Hawks are 4-0-1 against the Wildcats over the last five meetings. Last year, the teams played a doubleheader at Leadership Park with Lehigh winning game one 2-1 and game two ending in a 2-2 tie after seven innings due to darkness.
Following Wednesday's game, Lehigh will close out the regular season with three games at Colgate. The Mountain Hawks and Raiders will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday with start times both days set for noon.
