Mountain Hawks to compete at Penn Relays, host Covert Classic this weekend

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The men's track and field team will travel to The University of Pennsylvania to compete in the Penn Relays on Thursday before hosting the Carol and John Covert Classic at the Goodman Track and Field Complex for senior day on Friday and Saturday.

The Penn Relays begin for the Mountain Hawks Thursday evening with the 3000m steeplechase at 7:30 p.m. Fifth year John Tolbert is competing in the 3000m steeplechase. Last season, he competed in the event at the IC4A Championships and the Patriot League Championships.

Juniors Kip Yegon and Jeffrey Kirshenbaum are slated to compete in the 5000m, which begins at 9:20 p.m. Thursday.

On Friday, sophomore Evan El-Halawani will compete in the 400m hurdles at 9 a.m. El-Halawani set a personal record in the 400m hurdles earlier this season at the Lehigh versus Lafayette Dual Meet, earning a time of 54.27.

Two relay teams are competing for the Mountain Hawks on Friday afternoon. The 4x100m team of sophomore Matt Solomon, senior Emre Soybas, junior Kyle Sult and freshman Trevor Thenga are slated to race at 12:30 p.m. The 4x400m relay team of Soybas, freshman Nick Crociata, sophomore Sean Brown and fifth year Kyle Kirk are scheduled to begin its race at 4:15 p.m.

The final relay team of freshman Kyle Burke, junior Ryan Paradise, Kirk and Brown will compete in the 4x800m Saturday at 4 pm. Junior Joey Kelly is Lehigh's only other competitor Saturday. He's slated to compete in the pole vault at 2 p.m.

Lehigh is hosting the Carol and John Covert Classic, beginning Friday and carrying into Saturday. The meet, formerly known as the Lehigh Games, will honor the program's seniors at the conclusion of Saturday's events.

The Covert Classic begins at 2 p.m. Friday with the javelin followed by the hammer throw.

Saturday's field events kick off with the discus at 10 a.m. The track events begin at 11:25 a.m. with the 5000m.

The senior recognition is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. following the 4x400m relay at 4:15 p.m. The eight seniors being recognized are Bart Bancewicz, Kyle Berman, Ryan Givens, Max Jordan, Sam Layding, Alexander Rodgers, Emre Soybas and Clay Stabolepszy.
