Mountain Hawks fall 4-1 at Army in Patriot League semifinals

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Lehigh men's tennis team came up short in its bid to reach its first Patriot League Final since 2013 as the third-seeded Mountain Hawks fell 4-1 to No. 2 Army West Point Saturday in the Lichtenberg Tennis Center.
Senior George Cooper was a winner at No. 5 singles, but the Black Knights won the doubles point and three more singles matches to earn a date with rival Navy for the Patriot League championship on Sunday.
Lehigh's season comes to an end at 13-8.
Army (14-13), won the matches at the top two doubles flights by 6-4 scores to take a 1-0 lead. Myles Conlin and Nikita Larichev beat sophomore Harry Wang and freshman Zack Elliott at No. 1 and David Mitchell and David Gorshein topped junior Jack Martin-Dyer and senior Christopher Auteri at No. 2.
Cooper got Lehigh on the board and tied the match at 1-1 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Gorshein at No. 3.
The Black Knights went in front at No. 1 as Conlin won a first set tiebreak against Wang before taking the second set 6-1. Diego Huttepain knocked off Elliott in straight sets, taking the first 7-5 and winning the second in a tiebreak. Army clinched the match at No. 4 as Larichev rallied from a set down to beat senior Bryant Born in three sets.
The remaining two matches were in third sets when Army clinched. Martin-Dyer was a game away from a three-set win at No. 3 when the match ended.
Lehigh advanced to the Patriot League semifinals for the first time since 2016. The Mountain Hawks will lose four seniors to graduation: Auteri, Born, Cooper and Sam Bencheghib but return the top three players in their singles lineup next season.
