BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh continues its home-opening 10 game home stand with a non-league doubleheader against Saint Joseph's Wednesday afternoon. After suffering never before experienced results in its weekend series with Bucknell, the Mountain Hawks have simplified things into a five week season, beginning with Wednesday's twin bill and continuing this weekend when defending Patriot League champion Boston University visits for three games.
A three-game sweep at the hands of Bucknell, the first time a Lehigh softball team has ever been swept in a Patriot League series of three games or more, has left the Mountain Hawks at 10-18 overall and 3-3 in the league. Lehigh has dropped four straight overall, since topping Kent State 5-2 in the first game of its home-opening doubleheader last Wednesday.
Lehigh has relied on its freshmen class for offense as of late as Jaelynn Chesson continues to lead the way. Chesson is 5-for-13 on the current home stand with three RBIs. She homered in the second inning of Sunday's series finale against Bucknell for Lehigh's first hit in eight-plus innings against Bison pitcher Raeanne Geffert. Chesson finished that game with two hits, drew a pair of walks against Geffert the day before and also had Lehigh's lone hit in the nightcap against Kent State on March 27. Classmate Addie Kittel showed signs of life on Sunday with a pair of hits, while a third freshman, Karsen O'Rourke has four hits and three RBIs on this home stand.
Chesson continues to lead Lehigh overall in batting average (.400), runs (12), home runs (4) and RBIs (15) and is tied with junior Mary-Hannah Smith for the team lead with 32 hits.
Lehigh will look to get its pitching staff going again. Junior Parker Boyd picked up a win against Kent State and pitched well in defeat in game one against Bucknell. Freshman Gabriella Nori had some rough patches in two starts last week but retired all four batters she faced in relief on Sunday.
Saint Joseph's is 14-14 on the season and just dropped two of three games at home to George Washington to fall to 4-2 in Atlantic 10 play. The Hawks did win Sunday's series finale 7-4.
Sarah Ostaszewski leads Saint Joseph's in batting at .372 as well as hits (35) and doubles (8). Caela Abadie has been the top run producer with four home runs and 25 RBIs to go with a .347 average. Ashley Ventura has seen the majority of the time in the pitcher's circle and is 9-9 with a 2.89 ERA.
Saint Joseph's leads the all-time series 24-18 but Lehigh has won five of the last seven games dating back to 2013. Last year the teams traded 6-3 victories in a doubleheader split. Payton Alsobrooks went 5-for-7 with the first two home runs of her career in that twin bill.
Both of Wednesday's games will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network on Stadium.
Following Wednesday's doubleheader, Lehigh will host Boston University for three games, with a doubleheader set for Saturday and a single game Sunday at Leadership Park.
