TEMPE, Ariz. – The Lehigh softball team opened its spring break trip to Arizona with a Friday split at Farrington Stadium. The Mountain Hawks opened the day with a 6-2 win over South Dakota, then fell 5-0 to No. 25 Michigan.

Lehigh is now 6-3 on the season following Friday's split.
The visiting team against South Dakota, the Mountain Hawks wasted little time getting to work as they plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning. Junior Hannah Edwards reached on a one out bunt single and then Smith followed with a single to left. An error on the Coyote left fielder allowed Edwards to come around to score and Smith ended up at third base. Freshman Jaelynn Chesson followed with a RBI single up the middle bringing Smith home with Lehigh's second run.
Lehigh tacked on one in the third on a pinch hit RBI single by junior Reva Alderman that brought home freshman Karsen O'Rourke.
South Dakota (14-10) scored its only two runs on a two-run home run by Lauren Wobken off junior Parker Boyd in the fourth, but the Mountain Hawks responded immediately with three in the top of the fifth. Against No. 25 Michigan, freshman Gabriella Nori set down the Wolverines in order in the top of the first, while Smith doubled in the bottom of the first before being stranded at second base.
Michigan scored four runs in the second on a two-run single, a sacrifice fly and an attempted double steal; and added another in the third on a Hannah Carson RBI double.
