
Two ranked foes prove too strong for Mountain Hawks on day two of ASU Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. – Day two of the ASU Invitational saw Lehigh run into a pair of nationally-ranked squads. The Mountain Hawks dropped their first game of the day 12-3 to No. 21 James Madison but battled back and were more competitive against No. 16 Arizona State in a 4-1 setback.
Junior Mary-Hannah Smith had three of Lehigh's nine hits on the day including a RBI double against Arizona State. Freshman Jaelynn Chesson clubbed her first career home run against James Madison. The two losses drop Lehigh to 6-5 on the season.
Game one on Saturday saw James Madison (11-5) hit four home runs off Lehigh pitching. Dukes' ace pitcher Megan Good played first base and put JMU on the board with a solo home run off senior Emily Sorem in the second inning.
The Dukes added five runs in the third inning on a two-run home run by Kate Gordon and a three-run shot by Logan Newton.
Lehigh got three runs back in the top of the fourth as Smith singled with two outs and Chesson homered to left for her first career home run. The Mountain Hawks then loaded the bases on a single, a hit batter, and an error before freshman Carley Barjaktarovich singled home classmate Karsen O'Rourke.
James Madison put things out of reach with six runs in the fourth, including a two-run double by Good and Newton's second home run of the game.
Odicci Alexander held Lehigh to three runs on four hits over five innings for JMU. Sorem took the loss, allowing seven runs on seven hits in three-plus innings.
Junior Parker Boyd kept Arizona State off the board through two innings while Lehigh's offense staked her to a 1-0 lead heading to the home third. Senior Ashley Rabago reached on an error, took second on a ground out and scored on a single to right by Smith.
Arizona State (18-7) pulled even on back-to-back doubles by Skylar McCarty and Morgan Howe in the bottom of the third and took the lead on Kiara Kennedy's fourth-inning RBI single.
Maddi Hackbarth added a two-run home run off freshman Gabriella Nori in the fifth inning.
Smith was 2-for-3 with a double against the Sun Devils, with Rabago, O'Rourke and senior Jennifer Stoll adding singles.
Boyd took the loss allowing two runs on five hits in four innings, with two walks and three strikeouts. Nori allowed two runs on three hits in two innings with two strikeouts.
Lehigh will wrap-up the ASU Invitational on Sunday with a game against defending WAC champion New Mexico State with first pitch set for 12:30 p.m. ET/9:30 a.m. MT.
