PHOENIX – The Lehigh softball team has encountered unseasonably cool Arizona temperatures over the last few days and unfortunately for the Mountain Hawks, the bats have gone cold as well. The Mountain Hawks were held to just four singles in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of Grand Canyon Wednesday at GCU Softball Stadium.
The host Lopes scored an unearned run in the first inning and never looked back, taking game one 5-0, then hit three home runs in game two, capped by Jordon Keeton's game-ending grand slam to take the nightcap 9-0 in five innings.
Lehigh has now dropped seven straight since beating South Dakota in the first game of its Arizona trip and now stands at 6-9 on the season. GCU, which picked up a win over then-No. 1 Florida State last week, improves to 14-13.
Game one saw Brianna Aguilar limit Lehigh to two hits over seven innings with a walk and seven strikeouts. Freshman Carley Barjaktarovich was Lehigh's first base runner after drawing a fourth inning walk, while senior Jennifer Stole and junior Mary-Hannah Smith reached on singles in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively.
A leadoff error in the bottom of the first came around to score on a Sierra Smith RBI single, but junior Parker Boyd limited the damage to just one run. Savannah Tourville singled home two more runs in the fifth, and Shea Smith and Sierra Smith delivered back-to-back RBI singles in the sixth. Both Smith sisters were 3-for-4 in the opener.
Boyd allowed five runs (three earned) on 11 hits with a walk and six strikeouts as she falls to 3-3 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks had the better of the early chances in game two, with Barjaktarovich singling with one out in the first. Lehigh put two on with one out in the top of the third as freshman Karsen O'Rourke singled and senior Ashley Rabago reached on an error. Ryan Denhart got out of the inning unscathed, however, as Barjaktarovich was called out for making contact out of the batters' box and Smith flew out to right to end the threat.
GCU took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the third on a pair of two run home runs by Shea Smith and Taylor Olsen.
The Lopes put the game away with a five-run fifth, with Olsen delivering a RBI single, followed by Keeton's grand slam to left two batters later.
Freshman Gabriella Nori took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits in three innings. Senior Emily Sorem pitched the final 1.1 innings.
The Mountain Hawks will close out their spring break trip with four more games at GCU Softball Stadium as part of the GCU Invitational. Lehigh will play Weber State and Ohio State twice on both Friday and Saturday. On Friday, the Mountain Hawks will face Weber State at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. MT and Ohio State at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. MT.
