Mountain Hawks drop two on first day of GCU Invitational

PHOENIX – Following a day off Thursday, Lehigh kicked off the final leg of its spring break trip to Arizona, taking on Weber State and Ohio State Friday on the first day of the GCU Invitational at GCU Softball Stadium. The Mountain Hawks were unable to get back in the win column, however, as they fell victim to two big innings in an 11-2 loss to the Wildcats in game one Friday. Junior Parker Boyd delivered a strong start against a Buckeye team that is receiving votes in the national polls, but Lehigh mustered just two hits and left seven runners on base in a 2-0 setback.

The Mountain Hawks enter the final day of their Arizona trip looking to stop their longest slide in 28 years. Lehigh falls to 6-11 following Friday's action and has dropped nine straight since beating South Dakota in its Arizona opener last Friday.

In its first game Friday against Weber State (5-14), three Lehigh errors contributed to five of the 11 Wildcat runs being unearned. Weber State scored six runs in the third inning, highlighted by two-run doubles by Ashlyn Visser and Faith Hoe.

Lehigh pulled two runs back in the fourth, putting two runners on with one out via a hit and an error. Sophomore Payton Alsobrooks doubled to right center to bring home Lehigh's first run since the sixth inning Sunday against New Mexico State. Two batters later, junior Hannah Edwards singled through the left side to bring the Mountain Hawks within 6-2.

The Wildcats put the game out of reach with five runs in the fifth, including a two-run single by Chloe Camarero.

Tatiana Su'esu'e held Lehigh to one unearned run on four hits in the five-inning win. Freshman Gabriella Nori was charged with 10 runs (six earned) in nine hits in 4.1 innings, while sophomore Lainey Stephenson was also charged with an unearned run.

In Friday's second game, Lehigh had base runners in each of the first five innings against Morgan Ray but could not push any runs across against the Buckeyes. Alsobrooks reached base three times, leading off with a single and drawing two walks. Senior Jennifer Stoll had Lehigh's only other hit, a second-inning leadoff single, but the Mountain Hawks could not capitalize on the seven walks issued by Ray.

Boyd allowed just two runs on five hits and did not walk a batter while striking out seven. She struck out the first two batters of the bottom of the first, but after a single by Emily Clark (3-for-3) and a double by Kallie Boren, Lehigh trailed 1-0. Boyd kept the Buckeyes at bat until the sixth, when Clark led off with a double and scored on a Boren single.

The Mountain Hawks will close out the GCU Invitational against these same two teams on Saturday. Lehigh will face Ohio State at 1 p.m. ET/10 a.m. MST and Weber State at 3:30 p.m. ET/12:30 p.m. MST.
