PRINCETON, N.J. – No. 14 Princeton saved its best for third periods, which ultimately led the host Tigers past No. 7 Lehigh 18-14 Saturday at Jadwin Gym. The Mountain Hawks won just four of the 10 bouts, with all six of the losses by three points or fewer and five of the six losses by one or two points.
The Mountain Hawks won three of the final four bouts, including major decisions by senior Jordan Kutler and junior Jordan Wood, but fall to 1-1 on the dual season. Princeton wins in its dual opener, and owns its first two-dual winning streak in the series since 1935 and 1937.
The dual started with a top 12 matchup at 125. Junior Brandon Paetzell trailed 1-0 after two periods before taking down fifth-ranked Patrick Glory and gaining a minute of riding time advantage. A Glory escape plus a penalty point for locked hands sent the match into overtime tied at 3-3, where Glory scored a takedown to win 5-3 and put the hosts in front.
Junior Nick Farro answered for the Mountain Hawks with a strong 11-5 win over Sean Pierson to tie the dual at 3-3.
From there, Princeton won four straight to take a 15-3 lead, with all four wins coming by one or two points. A stalling point was the deciding factor in a 2-1 decision for Marshall Keller over senior Ryan Pomrinca, as Keller avenged two losses to Pomrinca last season.
A trade of third period reversals left sophomore Jimmy Hoffman on the short end of a 6-5 decision against Mike D'Angelo at 149.
The featured bout of the dual was at 157 where tenth-ranked sophomore Josh Humphreys met No. 9 Quincy Monday. Humphreys scored a TD late in the first period and rode out the second, while giving up a locked hands point, to lead 2-1 after two. Early in the third, Monday took Humphreys to his back with a headlock and that six point move was too much to overcome as Humphreys fell 8-6 and Lehigh trailed 12-3 at intermission. Humphreys and Monday are now tied 2-2 over the last two years, with Humphreys winning twice last season and Monday winning twice this season.
At 165, freshman Brian Meyer gave up a first period takedown and came up just short in a tying takedown attempt late in the third as he fell 4-2 to Grant Cuomo.
Kutler stopped the Tiger run with a 16-6 major decision over Kevin Parker at 174. Junior Chris Weiler then battled back from an early 4-1 deficit, scoring a takedown and four point near fall at the second period buzzer before going on to defeat Travis Stefanik 11-4 at 184.
Princeton locked up the dual at 197 as second-ranked Patrick Brucki won a 7-4 decision over junior Jake Jakobsen.
Wood won a 13-2 major decision over Aidan Conner in the final bout of the dual.
The Mountain Hawks are back in action on Sunday when they welcome No. 12 Pittsburgh to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall for a 2 p.m. match. Tickets can be purchased at LehighTickets.com or prior to the match at the Grace Hall ticket window.
