Lehigh surges past Misericordia, 87-68

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's basketball team scored 55 second-half points to turn a halftime tie into a runaway 87-68 victory over Misericordia on Monday evening in Stabler Arena. Freshman Reed Fenton was tremendous, scoring a career-high 14 points while adding four rebounds, four assists and a steal. Junior James Karnik posted his second double-double of the young season (and eighth of his career) with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Now 3-2 on the year, the Mountain Hawks hit the road for four straight beginning with games this Thursday and Saturday at Drake and Saint Mary's, respectively.
"I thought we did a better job of creating offense in the second half by reversing the basketball," said Lehigh head coach Brett Reed. "We got more of our offense going to the basket, we were able to get to the free throw line a little bit more and we were able to finish in the paint better. We had a lot of open shots in the first half; we just didn't convert. We weren't able to jump Misericordia the way in which we would have liked, but we were still able to get some effective work done, make some adjustments and learn through the game."
Fenton finished 4-of-7 from the field, including 6-of-7 from the free throw line. Karnik was 9-of-16 shooting, also tying a career high with three steals. Sophomore Jeameril Wilson was also strong, posting 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting.
All nine of the Mountain Hawks who scored tallied at least five points. Senior Jordan Cohen had eight points, five rebounds and five assists while freshman Evan Taylor added eight points.
The Cougars jumped out to an early lead until the Mountain Hawks used a 7-0 run to turn a 7-6 deficit into a 13-7 lead with 12:08 left in the first half. The run ended with four straight points from Jeameril Wilson.
A Fenton fastbreak layup gave the Mountain Hawks a 17-10 advantage with 9:18 on the clock, but Misericordia scored the next 12 points to open a 22-17 lead with 6:27 remaining in the first.
The Cougars' lead reached seven, but Lehigh ended the half on a 10-3 run, capped off by a Fenton basket with 57 seconds on the clock, to pull even at 32 at the half.
"I thought Reed was fantastic," said Coach Reed. "He seemed to be in all the right floor spots. He probably led us in deflections for the day because of his activity level. He played hard for all the minutes he was out there on the floor."
The Mountain Hawks began the second half with 14 of the first 18 points, as eight straight Lehigh points – four of which came from Cohen – gave the Mountain Hawks a 46-36 advantage with 16:47 on the clock.
Lehigh slowly increased its lead as the half progressed, eventually reaching 20 following a Fenton 3-point play with 4:03 remaining.
The margin reached 22 at one point, on the way to the 87-68 victory.
The Mountain Hawks shot 46.1 percent for the game (35-of-76), including 35.7 percent from 3-point range (5-of-14). Misericordia finished at 36.7 percent (22-of-60) and 29.6 percent from long distance (8-of-27). The Mountain Hawks held a 45-35 edge in rebounds.
"Jeameril and James each in their own right, ended up helping us out, especially in the second half," said Reed. "Jeameril has the ability to finish around the basket. He had some great rip-and-go moves, and he elevated for some of his finishes to find slashing windows of space to put the ball off the glass and get his finishes. James consistently has been a really tough player for us. He rebounds the ball and got us a couple extra possessions that gave us a lot of energy and a lot of life."
Lehigh now heads west for two games in three days, at Drake (in Iowa) on Thursday and Saint Mary's (California) on Saturday. Both games will start at 8 p.m. ET.
