Lehigh set for home contest vs. Misericordia Monday night

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's basketball team continues a busy stretch of four games in eight days when it returns home on Monday night to host Misericordia. Opening tipoff is set for around 7:30 p.m. on the Patriot League Network, following the Lehigh women's team against Central Connecticut State at 5:30. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a 79-53 defeat at Virginia Tech, a game that featured two very different halves of basketball. After a strong start featuring a number of leads and only trailing by five at the break, the Hokies pulled away in the second.

Lehigh led by as much as six in the first half Saturday, opening a 15-9 advantage just over seven minutes into the game. Virginia Tech later used a 10-0 run to take a 23-18 lead, the Mountain Hawks pulled even at 23 and 25, but could never retake the lead. Lehigh hung within five at the half, but Virginia Tech outscored the Mountain Hawks 42-21 in the second to pull away. A big bright spot early in the second for Lehigh was junior Jeameril Wilson, who put down a monster dunk over a defender to open the second-half scoring.

A balanced attack saw eight players attempt between five and eight field goal attempts. Senior Jordan Cohen and Wilson led the offense with 11 points apiece while junior Marques Wilson and freshman Reed Fenton scored six apiece. Turnovers hurt the Mountain Hawks, as they had 19 to just 10 for Virginia Tech. The Hokies hit 44.4 percent of their first-half shots (26.3 percent from 3-point range), but those numbers increased to 51.7 percent (50.0 percent from 3) in the second.

The effort came against a Virginia Tech program that advanced to the Sweet 16 last season. This year's version is much different, having lost its top five scorers (and its head coach) in the offseason. Nevertheless, the Hokies improved to 4-0 and Lehigh's upset bid fell short. The Mountain Hawks were vying for their first win over a power conference opponent since Mississippi State in 2016 and first win over an ACC team since the 2012 NCAA Tournament against Duke.

Monday will be Lehigh's final home game until Saturday, Dec. 7 vs. Yale. In that time, the Mountain Hawks will play three straight on the road, including two games in three days later in the week (Thursday at Drake in Iowa and Saturday at Saint Mary's in California).

Misericordia stands 1-2 on the season, most recently defeating Mount St. Mary on Saturday, 83-73. Tony Harding leads the Cougars in scoring, averaging 10.3 points (to go with 5.3 boards). Patrick Douthit and Noah Rivera are right behind, averaging 9.7 per contest. Rivera also leads the Cougars in rebounding (7.7). Misercordia finished last season 14-12, 7-7 in conference play.

Monday marks the first-ever meeting between Lehigh and Misericordia.

Following Monday's game, Lehigh heads west for two games in three days, at Drake (in Iowa) on Thursday and Saint Mary's (California) on Saturday.
