BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's golf team will close out its fall schedule when the Mountain Hawks host the two-day, 36-hole Lehigh Invitational, beginning Monday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. The Mountain Hawks are the three-time defending champions at their own tournament, edging Fairleigh Dickinson by the smallest of margins in each of the last two years.
Saucon Valley Country Club, founded in 1920, has grown from 18 holes and a clubhouse to become one of the largest private clubs in North America. It encompasses 800 acres and consists of four courses, including the Weyhill Course, Old Course, Grace Course and Short Course. The Grace Course opened with nine holes in the fall of 1953 with the second nine opened for play in 1958. Named for Eugene Gifford Grace (Lehigh Class of 1899), longtime president and chairman of Bethlehem Steel, the Grace Course measures 6,012 yards from the ladies tees and features greens nearly twice the size of those on the Old Course but without the severe contours.
This will be the fourth and final fall tournament for the Mountain Hawks, who finished second at the FDU Invitational, fourth at the Bucknell Invitational, and most recently, ninth out of 14 teams at the Boston College Intercollegiate, Sept. 23-24. Freshman Addy Douglas led the Mountain Hawks at both Bucknell and Boston College, while senior Minuette Laessig led the way for four Lehigh players who finished in the top 10 in the fall-opener at FDU.
Lehigh's lineup for the Lehigh Invitational is expected to feature Laessig, senior Rebecca Markunas, junior Angela Ding and freshmen Hannah Foster and Iris Shin. Freshman Marina Mendez will compete as an individual. Douglas will miss the Lehigh Invitational due to illness.
Last year, Lehigh on the team title at 329 (317-312) to beat FDU by two strokes. Laessig posted a top 10 finish, tying for eighth place. Markunas finished 12th, competing as an individual, while Ding tied for 37th.
This year's tournament will feature 10 teams, with Lehigh joined by Fairfield, Fairleigh Dickinson, La Salle, Maryland Eastern Shore, Monmouth, Quinnipiac, Saint Francis, Siena and St. John's.
Lehigh will play with FDU and Quinnipiac with players going off the first tee beginning at 10:20 a.m. Monday's opening round begins at 9:30 a.m. with players going off from the first and 10th tees. Tuesday's final round will also begin at 9:30 a.m. with players going off holes one and 10 based on the team standings.
