BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks are coming off an impressive outing at the Bison Open in Lewisburg, Pa., where they saw junior Hannah Bonaguidi place second overall while a trio of freshmen (Jamie Zamrin, Nicole Abbondandelo, Jade Sessions) were the next three to finish.
"The Bucknell meet was a great opportunity for us to all see the course the Patriot League Championship will be on; and for some of our underclassmen, especially the freshmen, to get their first colligate race under their belt," said head coach Debbie Utesch in regards to the Mountain Hawks last race. "We also had a sprinkling of upperclassmen in the meet, so that gave them the opportunity to lead the team and jump into some leadership roles."
After ranking 15th in the preseason coaches' poll, Lehigh is now up to 11th in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Lehigh now turns it's attention to it's lone dual meet of the year, as they travel to Easton, Pa., to take on rivals Lafayette Saturday, September 15 with a start time set for 10:45 a.m.
"This is the only dual meet we have per season, so it is a different concept because it's a full team effort. It'll be the first full team race of the year so there are a couple other components going on," said Utesch. "There is also the team component of us versus Lafayette and how to strategize against them. We're also putting the full team on the line for the first time, so the kids who haven't run this year will be curious to see where they stack up against their teammates."
You have to look back to the 2004 season to see the last time the Mountain Hawks have been out run by the Leopards, as Lehigh was defeated by a score of 34-24.
Last year's meeting between these two schools saw a lopsided 50-15 victory for the Mountain Hawks, with Maura Henderson winning the race with a time of 21:35.1. Lehigh scored the next six highest times with a total of eight of the top-10 times.
Concluding the annual rivalry, the Mountain Hawks will make their way to Boston, Mass., to compete to the Coast-To-Coast Battle In Beantown race hosted by Boston College.
