TAMPA, Fla. – Three members of the Lehigh track and field programs have arrived in the Sunshine State to compete in the First Round of the NCAA Championships. Sophomore Hannah Patrick has qualified for the javelin for the second straight year, while fellow sophomores Ashleigh Crawford and Victor Yegon will make their first career appearances at the prelims in the 3,000m steeplechase. The trio will be among 30 athletes from the Patriot League competing at the meet. All of the action will take place at USF's Track and Field Stadium this weekend from Thursday through Saturday.
All participants in Tampa this weekend rank as the top 48 of each event in the NCAA's East Region. The top 12 placers in each event this weekend will qualify for the final round of the NCAA National Championships in Eugene, Oregon on June 6-9, where they will be joined by the top 12 placers from this weekend's West Region preliminary action in Sacramento, California.
Due to expected inclement weather on Thursday, the original event schedule has been revised. Patrick will now kick things off for the Mountain Hawks at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday afternoon, while Yegon and Crawford will both run the steeplechase on Friday evening at 8 p.m. and 8:40 p.m., respectively. Live results are available for all events and the entire championships will be streamed live online for Flotrack.com subscribers.
Patrick enters this year's first round ranked No. 43 in the East Region in the javelin, after throwing a personal best 45.61 meters at the Penn Relays. Patrick medaled for the second straight season at this year's Patriot League Championships after finishing runner-up (42.57 meters). She also placed ninth at the ECAC Championships (42.26m), won the javelin at the Lehigh-Lafayette dual and placed seventh at the Bison Outdoor Classic (7th of 12/45.39m) and the Virginia Challenge (7th of 38/44.38m). Her seed this season is three spots and 72 centimeters ahead of her seed from a year ago, when she finished 32nd at the NCAA First Round.
Crawford will be making her first career appearance at the NCAA First Round following a spectacular sophomore campaign that included her first career Patriot League Championship in the steeplechase. She won the league title in 10:31.48, marking the second straight year she landed on the podium at the PLC after finishing third as a freshman in 2017. Her seed time and personal record of 10:28.77 was the best in the Patriot League this season, over nine seconds faster than the next closest competitor, coming when she placed sixth out of 34 at the Larry Ellis Invitational on April 20. One week later at the Penn Relays, she broke the school's 3,000m record (9:41.30), besting the old mark from 1997 by 8.15 seconds.
Yegon will represent the Lehigh men in the 3,000m steeplechase on Friday evening. Much like Crawford, Yegon captured his first PL title back on May 5. He has lowered his personal record time in each of his last four steeplechases, beginning with a 9:24.21 mark at the Bison Outdoor Classic, 9:23.63 at the Penn Relays, 9:06.58 with his victory at the Patriot League Championships, and his All-East, fifth place showing of 9:00.79 at the IC4A Championships, which ranks him 42nd in the East Region.
Last season, Lehigh had four first round qualifiers, with two advancing to the NCAA Championships in Oregon. Departed senior Courtney Avery became the University's first ever female to earn First Team All-America honors after finishing tied for sixth overall in the high jump. It was her second straight appearance in the finals and second career All-America honor, having previously earned second team honors in 2016. Lucas Warning represented the Lehigh men in Oregon, finishing 10th overall in the shot put to earn Second Team All-America.
