BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Late last month, former Lehigh men's basketball guard Michael Ojo played with the Nigerian National senior men's team in the FIBA African World Cup Qualifiers in Bamako, Mali.
Â
The first round features four groups of four teams each. There are 16 teams across four groups with the top three teams from each group advancing to the second round, where the 12 qualified teams are divided in two more groups of six teams each. The top two teams from these groups and the best third-ranked team will secure their tickets for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019.
Â
Ojo, a 2011 graduate, averaged 5.0 points per game during the tournament as Nigeria went 3-0 with wins over Uganda, Mali and Rwanda. Nigeria will return to action in late June for the second phase of the First Round.Â
Â
Ojo wrapped up his career in 2011 with his best season, averaging 10.9 points and 4.2 rebounds per game. A senior captain, Ojo was the Mountain Hawks' third-leading scorer in 2010-11. He shot a sizzling 40.2 percent from three-point range, which stood second in the Patriot League, while his 77.5 free throw percentage stood 10th best.
Â
Ojo plays professionally in the British Basketball League for the Worcester Wolves. He plays in the same league as former Lehigh point guard Mackey McKnight.
