Lehigh Men Take Second at Bucknell Tune-Up

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lehigh men's track and field team finished second out of eight teams on Friday night at the Bucknell Tune-Up, the team's final meet before next weekend's Patriot League Championships. The Mountain Hawks finished with 164 points, just 1.5 points behind first place Bucknell, and 106 points ahead of third place Indiana (Pa.). Lehigh athletes took home five individual event titles from Kyle Sult (60H), Michael Camera (200m), Sean Brown (mile), Brian Arita (3000m), and Erik Metz (TJ). Lehigh also earned seven runner-up finishes and six third place finishes.
Starting on the track, Sult won the 60m hurdles by tying his PR of 8.52 seconds. Freshman Samuel Tapera landed on the podium in the finals of the 60m dash, tying his PR of 7.03 in third place.
Camera won the 200m dash, besting his PR by 0.02 seconds (22.50). Junior Emre Soybas joined him on the podium in third (22.57), and also had a runner-up showing in the 400m dash (51.04).
In the 800m, David Fletcher earned one team point in sixth place (1:59.86). In the 1,000m run, Kyle Berman (2:33.00) and James Chappell (2:38.59) combined for 14 team points in second and third places of the 1,000m run. Freshman Sean Brown broke the tape in the mile by besting his PR by over 14 seconds in 4:17.36, finishing just ahead of runner-up performer Victor Yegon (4:20.21).
Lehigh had a strong showing in the 3,000m with three runners scoring in the top five. Arita led the way by taking home the top spot in personal record time of 8:35.84, besting his previous high mark by over 10 seconds. Alexander Fitzgerald came in third in 8:45.20 and freshman Brad DeMassa took fifth in 8:48.31.
Lehigh scored six points in the 4x400 relay from Sean Brown, Chappell, Berman and Fletcher who finished in 3:37.63.
In the field events, Lehigh grabbed a pair of runner up finishes in the throws as freshman Anastasios Mouzakis took home second place in the weight throw (16.79m) and junior Alexander Rodgers took runner-up in the shot put (14.68m). Freshman Christopher Alexy also scored in the shot put, PR-ing at 13.74m in sixth place.
In the jumps, Lehigh went two-three in the long jump behind junior Ryan Givens (6.67m) in second and freshman Justin Brown in third (6.59m). Brown followed the up with a 1.84m high jump, which landed him in fourth. Metz won his first collegiate event in the triple jump at 13.22m, with teammate Taj-Blount Oden finishing second (13.07m). Over in the vault, Joey Kelly cleared 4.35m to place third.
The Patriot League Championships will culminate the end of the indoor season for the Mountain Hawks next weekend, taking place Saturday and Sunday February 17-18 at Bucknell's Gerhard Fieldhouse. Check back to Lehighsports.com for a preview leading up to the meet.
