Lehigh picks up thrilling 92-89 overtime win over Bucknell

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Five Mountain Hawks scored in double figures as the Lehigh men's basketball team erased an eight-point deficit with less than seven minutes remaining in regulation, on its way to a thrilling 92-89 win over Bucknell on Monday evening in Stabler In the process, Lehigh picked up its third straight win to improve to 11-13 overall, 6-7 in the Patriot League while snapping the Bison's 10-game winning streak and beating Bucknell for the fourth time in its last six tries. Sophomore Pat Andree led the offense with 24 points while classmate Jordan Cohen scored a career-high 21 and freshman James Karnik posted his third-career double-double with 12 points and 11 boards. Monday's game was presented by Ready Nutrition.

"Our guys came battled adversity and they pulled together," said Lehigh head coach Brett Reed. "There were some situations on the floor where you could really see the unity of the guys, how much they cared for each other and how much they were willing to refocus and help each other out."

Monday marked Lehigh's third overtime win of the season, compared to just one defeat. Andree finished the evening 5-of-6 from three-point range to help Lehigh finished 11-of-21 for the game, its fourth straight game over 50 percent from deep. It also marked the Mountain Hawks' seventh consecutive contest with double-figure made threes. Cohen scored 14 of his 21 points in the second half, finishing the evening 6-of-9 from the field and 8-of-9 from the free throw line, including a perfect 6-of-6 in the final 29 seconds. Junior Lance Tejada returned from injury to score 17 points in just 20 minutes, knocking down 3-of-4 three-pointers. Fourteen of those points came in the second half. Senior Kahron Ross added 12 points, five rebounds and five steals.

Karnik was strong at both ends of the floor, not only posting a double-double, but also containing reigning Patriot League Player of the Year Nana Foulland and holding him to 14 points on 4-of-10 shooting.

"I thought James answered the call," said Reed. "He plays hard and that continued tonight. For him to get a double-double as a freshman in a big-time game, that's clutch. He had some great finishes. I love the fact that he went up with authority to finish. He has the ability to elevate and getting that mindset to really attack the rim is important; he put it on display."

The Mountain Hawks used an early 7-0 run to turn a two-point lead into a nine-point advantage following the first of three Karnik dunks in the game, which gave Lehigh a 15-6 advantage with 13:17 on the first-half clock. A few minutes later, a Kyle Leufroy trey gave the Mountain Hawks a 21-13 lead, but Bucknell slowly began to inch back, scoring 16 of the next 21 points capped off by a Kimbal Mackenzie fastbreak layup which gave the Bison a 29-26 lead with 5:13 remaining in the first.

Bucknell's lead eventually reached six with 2:01 to go, but Lehigh scored the final four first-half points on layups from Karnik and Ross to pull within 40-38 at the half.

The teams went back and forth early in the second half, which saw 10 lead changes in the first 10 minutes of the stanza. Bucknell went on to stage a 10-0 run to turn a 61-59 Lehigh lead into a 69-61 Bison advantage following a Stephen Brown layup with 6:50 on the clock.

Cohen knocked down two free throws with 6:20 remaining, snapping Lehigh's 3:25 scoreless drought and helping start a 12-3 Lehigh run. Two Andree free throws gave the Mountain Hawks a 73-72 lead with 2:14 remaining, their first lead in more than six minutes. From there, the game saw three lead changes as two Zach Thomas free throws gave the Bison a 76-75 lead with 35 seconds remaining, but Tejada hit one from the charity stripe with 27 seconds on the clock to force overtime.

Tejada came up big in the overtime period, hitting on two three-pointers in the first 2:23 of the period. Those treys helped the Mountain Hawks open a five-point lead following two Ross free throws with 1:26 remaining. Bucknell pulled as close as one down the stretch, but Cohen was clutch from the charity stripe, going 6-for-6 in the final 29 seconds. Thomas did have a three-point attempt with one second remaining, but it was off the mark.

For the game, Lehigh shot 45 percent from the field (29-of-65), including 52 percent from three-point range (11-of-21). Bucknell finished at 38 percent (26-of-68) and 27 percent from long distance (9-of-33). The Bison held a 45-40 edge in rebounds.

Lehigh now hits the road for its next two, beginning on Saturday at American. Opening tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
