BETHLEHEM, Pa. — After another 2-0 weekend, Lehigh returns to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall on Tuesday night for a challenge against American at 7 p.m.
The Mountain Hawks finished off Lafayette in straight sets on Friday night and followed up that performance with a four-set victory over Bucknell in Lewisburg Sunday.
Lehigh gets back to work on Tuesday night, looking for an opportunity to improve its record to 17-2 overall, 6-1 in the Patriot League. The Eagles, however, come into Bethlehem riding a six-match winning streak, starting the Patriot League slate with a 6-0 mark.
Juniors Emily Poole and Julia Pressly both finished the weekend with plenty to be happy about, especially on the offensive end. Poole hit .615 on Friday in the three-set victory over the Leopards, finishing with eight kills and six blocks. Poole then hit .286 with five kills and six blocks in the victory over Bucknell on Sunday. With her 11 blocks in two games, she took over the Patriot League lead with 88 blocks and leads with 1.29 blocks per set.
Pressly had herself a day on Sunday to lead the Mountain Hawks past the Bison. Through the first three sets, she didn't commit an error. Pressly finished with a season-high 13 kills in 25 opportunities and had a .480 hitting percentage for the match.
Sophomore Sabrina Lancaster heads into Tuesday's match with her best performance since her 22-kill performance against Maryland Eastern Shore on Sept. 11, after tallying 16 kills, five digs, two blocks and two aces and hit at her highest hitting mark since Sept. 8 vs. Penn. She finished the day with a .371 percentage.
It's been a team effort for the Mountain Hawks at setter, as both senior Megan Polak and freshman Alina Lam have made significant contributions. Lam registered her fifth straight double with 37 assists and 12 digs in the win over Bucknell, while Polak tallied 10 assists and four digs in three important sets in the tail-end of the contest.
The Mountain Hawks have had their opportunities to make a big statement this season with their incredible start, but American stands in their way. The Eagles are coming off a four-set victory over Colgate on Saturday and a sweep of Holy Cross on Friday night. Sophomore middle-blocker Jeanne Westney leads head coach Barry Goldman's squad with a hitting percentage of .375 with 57 kills and 35 total blocks. Senior middle-blocker Loren McKenzie has a .355 hitting mark with 122 kills and 85 total blocks to lead the team.
Junior libero Kristen Largay is averaging 4.32 digs per set with 307 on the year with 58 assists. However, the dominance of Kennedy Etheridge has been seen this season with 627 assists, averaging 0.27 per set.
This season American is hitting .246 as a team and hitting .278 in Patriot League play. The Mountain Hawks are hitting .220 overall as a team, holding opponents to a .142 hitting percentage. Lehigh is averaging 12.6 kills per set this season.
American leads the all-time series against Lehigh, 35-6 and have won the last two regular season matchups. The Eagles took the last matchup, a three-set sweep in the Patriot League semi-finals on Nov. 18, 2017.
Tuesday's match will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network at 7 p.m.
To cheer on the Mountain Hawks on Tuesday, there will be free pizza at 7 p.m. in Grace Hall for groups that RSVP to Ryan Milke: rpm418@lehigh.edu by noon Tuesday.
