Mountain Hawks drop Monday contest vs. Cornell, 2-0

10/8/2018 9:12:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Cornell scored a penalty stroke goal, along with a goal as the first half expired, accounting for all the Big Red would need as they downed the Lehigh field hockey team, 2-0 in a nonleague matchup on Monday evening. The Mountain Hawks had one stretch of seven shots and four penalty corners in the span of 3:14 in the first half, but couldn't convert. Lehigh will continue its four-game homestand on Saturday when it hosts Colgate at 11 a.m.

"We had a great second half," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "That's a second half we haven't seen from this team in a long time, so I was really happy and proud of some of the adjustments we made from our game on Saturday. We talked a lot about being a second-half team, making sure that we were making progress, which I definitely think we did tonight. Unfortunately, we weren't able to score goals and that's something we need to win games. We let some of our mistakes in the first half essentially dictate the result of the game."

Cornell tallied the game's first six shots, the sixth being a penalty stroke goal from Julianne Mangano to give the Big Red a 1-0 lead at the 15:15 mark. Lehigh immediately responded in a big way, tallying the game's next eight shots, five on goal. The Mountain Hawks' best chance came in the 26th minute as a shot got behind Big Red goalkeeper Maddie Henry, but defender Kristen Ferguson made an impressive defensive save.

Cornell would go on to double its lead as Taylor Gladd converted a rebound as the first-half clock expired.

The second half saw Cornell fire four straight shots to begin the stanza, but from that point forward, a very competitive half ensued with the Big Red holding a 6-4 shots edge from that point forward. Junior goalkeeper Paige Innarella stood tall with six second-half saves to finish with 10 for the game, but the Mountain Hawks struggled to create enough offense.

Final shots were 18-12 in favor of Cornell while Lehigh held a 7-4 edge in penalty corners.

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday when they host Colgate at 11 a.m. Lehigh will then welcome Rider on Sunday at 12 p.m. on Senior Day.

"If we play the way that we played today in the second half, then I think we'll be really competitive in the last third of our season," said Dallmeyer. "We really have to make sure that some of the mental slips we had, like allowing a goal in the final seconds of the first half, are adjusted and that we're tougher mentally and we're staying focused the entire 70 minutes. If we can do that and we can perform the way we did in the second half, then I'm excited for the last third to see what we can produce."
