Mountain Hawks topped by Crusaders, 3-2 Friday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — The Lehigh Mountain Hawks fought as hard as they could on Friday night at Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall, but they couldn't come away with a win, falling to Holy Cross in five sets, 25-18, 14-25, 23-25, 25-20, 11-15. The loss puts Lehigh at 17-6 overall, 6-5 in the Patriot League, having dropped four of its last five matches.
The Mountain Hawks got off to a good start with a first set win, before dropping sets two and three to the Crusaders.
Junior Julia Pressly led Lehigh in kills with 16 on the night. She had 39 attempts and finished with a .308 hitting percentage. Sophomore Hannah Wright finished with 13 kills while sophomore Sabrina Lancaster added 10 kills and hit .188 for the match. Juniors Lauren Bright and Emily Poole dominated by the net on Friday with six blocks each to combine for 12 between the two of them.
Senior Emily Develle led the Mountain Hawks in digs with 14, while Allison Garrett followed her up with 10 and Pressly finished with six digs.
At setter, it was a night for the freshmen as Alina Lam finished the night with 36 assists and seven digs, while Sarah Carman played the most action of her collegiate career so far, tallying 10 assists and five digs.
Lehigh hit .400 in the first set, but had a rough going in the later sets to finish with a .195 mark for the night.
The Crusaders had a big night from Regan Wright, who led the team with 13 kills, 22 digs and four assists. Johnna Shamley had 12 kills, three blocks and 15 digs, while Sophie VanSeveren added 16 digs and five assists. Kathleen Philo led Holy Cross with 22 assists, as Shannon Dwyer added 15. Claire Honan paced the Crusaders with 10 kills and a .450 hitting percentage.
Like Lehigh, Holy Cross also had up-and-down sets and finished with a hitting percentage of .190.
This is the second time Lehigh went five sets with Holy Cross this season, this time falling. The Mountain Hawks are 5-4 in five-set matches this season.
Lehigh has a tough road ahead of them, especially after the loss, however the Mountain Hawks have a quick turnaround with a match against Army West Point on Saturday for Senior Day. That match will tip off at 4 p.m.
