BETHLEHEM, Pa. — After a late charge in the fourth set, the Lehigh volleyball team fell short in defeating the Army Black Knights on Senior Day Saturday. The Mountain Hawks fell to Army West Point in five sets, 25-21, 17-25, 25-23, 23-25, 9-15.
With a 2-1 lead heading into the fourth set, the Mountain Hawks had a great chance to battle back after trailing 23-16, winning seven of the last eight points before falling 25-23.
In the fifth set, it was the Black Knights that took over late in the set after trailing 8-6, rattling off a 7-0 run to come back and defeat Lehigh 15-9 for the set and the match.
"This league is a tight league and it's a battle every time we step onto the court," said head coach Alexa Keckler. "We're pretty accustomed to five-set matches but where we were today at the end-point I just thought we couldn't find someone to terminate the ball and unfortunately that didn't go well for us."
The Mountain Hawks were led on Saturday by junior Julia Pressly for the second night in a row, finishing with 17 kills, eight digs and a .351 hitting percentage. Sophomore Hannah Wright added 12 kills and nine digs, while junior Emily Poole finished with seven kills, five blocks and a dig.
Keckler talked about the impact Julia Pressly has had on the Mountain Hawks the past several matches.
"I would say over the last couple weeks, she's really stepped out of her comfort zone, she's been really carrying us on her back," said Keckler. "She's been doing an excellent job finding the seams, finding holes, finding ways to score, so we're really proud of her for her maturity and leadership to step up in these big moments."
Freshman setter Alina Lam finished the match with 38 assists with six digs and senior Emily Develle had another top-notch performance on her special day, tallying 23 digs with four assists.
The Mountain Hawks hit .147 for the match including .227 in the third set.
The Black Knights were led by Allie Strong, who finished the match with 21 kills and eight digs, Courtney Horace who had 20 kills and seven digs and Emmy Barnhorst who tallied seven kills on six solo blocks. Barnhorst had a sequence late in the match that included three straight solo blocks to help Army gain ground on Lehigh.
Nikki Lum finished with 35 assists and 21 digs, while Hannah Pressley added 19 assists to her credit. Ana Oglivie also had 18 digs.
Army West Point hit .215 for the match, including .471 in the final set.
The loss is the Mountain Hawks' fifth in their last six matches, and they fall to .500 in Patriot League play with just four matches remaining. Lehigh is currently tied with Army for the fifth spot in the league.
Next up for Lehigh is a matchup with Bucknell at the Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall next Friday at 7 p.m.
