Lehigh hosts Holy Cross, Army in weekend matchups

BETHLEHEM, Pa. — Every match from here on out is extremely important, and the Mountain Hawks are in a position to control their own destiny to get into the Patriot League tournament between now and the rest of the season.
After a spirited five-set victory over Loyola last Saturday to get the season sweep, Lehigh returns to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall for a the stretch run, beginning with weekend matchups with Holy Cross on Friday and Army West Point on Saturday.
The Mountain Hawks have dropped three of their last four matches, but with six matches to go in the regular season, the outlook is bright with four of the six coming at home.
Lehigh is led by junior Emily Poole, who continues to dominate defensively, leading the Patriot League in blocks (106) and blocks per set (1.23). Poole is also third in the league in hitting percentage with a .352 mark. The Mountain Hawks are the Patriot League's best blocking team with 219.5 total blocks this season, thanks to Poole, junior Lauren Bright (85), sophomore Hannah Wright (53), sophomore Sabrina Lancaster (33) and junior Julia Pressly (30).
Wright is coming off one of her best performances of the season and was the biggest factor in the Mountain Hawks taking down the Greyhounds on Saturday. She finished the match with 11 kills, 12 digs and nine blocks.
Freshman setter Alina Lam leads the team in assists with 479 and assists per set with 7.37. Lam is also second on the team in digs with 173.
Senior libero Emily Develle has had a great stretch of matches as of late, leading the team with 360 digs, averaging 4.09 per set. Develle is currently second all-time in digs with 1,625, 68 behind Rachel Charles (2010-13) who had 1,693.
The Mountain Hawks are hitting .210 as a team this season and are holding all their opponents to .157 so far.
The first opponent of the weekend for Lehigh is Holy Cross, who gave the Mountain Hawks trouble the last time out. The Crusaders took the first and third sets on Sept. 29 before Lehigh won sets four and five to come away with the 3-2 victory. Sabrina Lancaster led the team in kills with 15, while Emily Poole contributed 10 blocks. Holy Cross was led by Rachel Harding who had 15 kills and Skye Daval-Santos tallied 29 digs.
The Crusaders haven't had the best luck as of late, falling in six of their last eight matches and are currently on a three-match losing streak most recently losing to Colgate in straight sets on Sunday. Kathleen Philo leads the team with a .288 hitting percentage, also with the team lead in assists with 410. Regan Wright leads the Patriot League in service aces with 40. Clare Honan is Holy Cross' leading blocker with 49 on the year.
On Saturday, the Mountain Hawks welcome the Black Knights of Army West Point to Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall. Army is coming off a straight set loss to Colgate on Saturday after defeating Holy Cross and Bucknell in its previous matches. The Black Knights are currently on the outside looking in, but have been more successful now than they were in the beginning of the season.
Lehigh's last time out against Army resulted in a five-set victory for the Mountain Hawks, the team's first win over the Black Knights in three years. Hannah Wright led the team with 19 kills, while Alina Lam tallied 30 assists and 17 digs. It was Courtney Horace who led Army with 22 kills, as Ana Oglivie totaled 21 digs to pace the team and Nikki Lum led the Black Knights with 34 assists.
Monica Eckford leads Army West Point in hitting with a .263 percentage. Emmy Barnhorst currently holds the team-lead in kills with 237 and blocks with 85. Nikki Lum is the Black Knights' leading assist-getter with 413 so far on the year. Army is hitting .188 as a team, holding opponents to .185 this season.
Friday night's matchup against Holy Cross is Dig Pink Night, where Lehigh volleyball raises awareness in their fight against breast cancer. A special ceremony will take place before the match kicks off at 7:05 p.m. As a part of Lehigh Volleyball's campaign to raise awareness, donations can be made to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Saturday's match vs. Army is Lehigh's Senior Day, celebrating the incredible careers of seniors Emily Develle and Megan Polak. A special ceremony for the two seniors will take place before the 4:05 start.
Both matches will be streamed live on the Patriot League Network.
