Mountain Hawks open season with 1-0 win over LIU Brooklyn

8/25/2017 10:17:00 PM | Field Hockey

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Behind a goal combination featuring first-year players, the Lehigh field hockey team beat LIU Brooklyn 1-0 for its second consecutive season-opening win on Friday evening at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Lenke Havas' first-career goal came off an assist from classmate Maddie Leavitt in the 26th minute, while the defense did not allow a single shot all game.

"I'm excited to get the first-game nerves out of the way," said Lehigh head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. "It was a big buildup from preseason to this point, so it was nice to have everyone on the field and be able to shake out the nerves and move forward with the win."

The Mountain Hawks finished with a dominant 18-0 edge in shots as they earned their first season-opening shutout since a 1-0 win over Rider in 2000. Lehigh has also picked up consecutive season-opening wins for the first time since they won five straight openers from 1996 to 2000.

Lehigh controlled possession from the get-go as junior Teresa Carotenuto fired a shot on goal less than two minutes in. The Mountain Hawks had a flurry late in the first half with two shots on goal in the 25th minute, leading to a penalty corner and the game's only goal. Leavitt took the corner and found Havas for a direct shot, which was rocketed past LIU Brooklyn goalkeeper Molly Jannell at the 25:26 mark.

The Mountain Hawks increased the pressure in the second half, tallying 11 shots, six on goal. Two of Lehigh's best chances weren't even on goal as junior Lindsay Alvarez hit the post in the 41st minute and crossbar in the 64th minute. LIU Brooklyn attempted to make a last ditch-effort to even the score, but the Mountain Hawks' defense wouldn't allow it.

Lehigh will return to action on Sunday when it hosts Ohio State out of the Big Ten at 11 a.m.

"We had 18 shots and only one goal so we need to make sure our shots are on cage," said Dallmeyer. "We need to make sure we're finishing and taking smart shots, we're looking up, we're cutting and we're stepping in front of the defenders to receive, move around and get those shots off. We didn't do as great a job as I would have liked today, but it's learning as we go. We won't make the same mistake twice."
