BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh field hockey team will open the 2017 season this weekend when it hosts LIU Brooklyn on Friday (7:30 p.m.) and Ohio State on Sunday (11 a.m.). The Mountain Hawks are looking for their second season-opening victory in as many years under head coach Caitlin Dallmeyer. Lehigh will look to build off a strong 2016 campaign, which included strong success at home and a four-game winning streak.

Sunday's game can be seen live, for free, on the Patriot League Network while live stats will be available both days.

Last season, the Mountain Hawks picked up their most home wins since 2004, finishing 6-4 in the friendly confines. Included was a season-opening win over Rider, the team's first victory against the Broncs since 2007. Overall, Lehigh outscored its opponents 23-18 at home. The last time the Mountain Hawks have won consecutive season openers was when they won five straight openers from 1996 to 2000.

Lehigh features a young team with nearly half of its roster being newcomer. The nine first-year players look to complement a strong returning core, including seniors Jackie Renda, Julia Washburn and Laura Yuh. The Mountain Hawks return a strong core at defense, including Washburn, Yuh and junior Kendra Sandhu. Offensively, Lehigh lost its top scorer Gabby Tofig to graduation, along with Marissa Glatt, who was tied for second on the team in points. Junior Teresa Carotenuto is the top returnee after tallying 14 points last season (six goals, two assists), one year after she was a first team All-League honoree as a rookie.

Led by first-year head coach Kyle DeSandes-Moyer, LIU Brooklyn finished last season 0-15. The Blackbirds' closest calls came against Sacred Heart (2-0) and Towson (3-1). Casey Carrigan returns after leading the offense with five points (two goals, one assist) in 2016. Meanwhile, a pair of goalkeepers split time, led by Molly Jannell, who recorded a 0.576 save percentage and 7.40 goals against average.

Ohio State is led by first-year head coach Jarred Martin, who came to the program from Duke University where he coached when Dallmeyer (then Caitlin Williams) was both a player and fellow assistant coach. Sunday will be Ohio State's season opener. The Buckeyes finished last year 6-11, including 1-7 in the Big Ten. Many of their losses were close as they fell to No. 7 Wake Forest (4-2), No. 6 Louisville (2-1), No. 8 Michigan (1-0), No. 5 Penn State (2-0), No. 6 Maryland (2-1 in overtime) and No. 15 Iowa (3-2). Three of Ohio State's top four scorers return, including Maddy Humphrey who was first with 32 points (12 goals, eight assists) and Esther Clotet Alsina, who was second with 17 points (seven goals, three assists). The team's goalkeeper Liz Tamburro returns after playing every minute last season, tallying a 2.48 goals against average and 0.711 save percentage.

This weekend marks the first-ever meeting against LIU Brooklyn. Lehigh won the only-ever meeting vs. Ohio State, 4-0 to open the 1988 season.

Following the weekend, Lehigh will return to action next Friday, Sept. 1 when it hosts La Salle at 5 p.m.
