BETHLEHEM, Pa - The Lehigh softball team completed the series sweep of the Bison of Bucknell with a 1-0 victory at Leadership Park on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Emily Sorem was nearly unhittable in the circle for the Mountain Hawks, allowing only two hits in seven innings. With the win, Lehigh improves to 18-15 on the year and is 8-1 in the Patriot League, giving the Mountain Hawks a one-game lead in the standings over Army West Point for first place.
Senior Ashley Cole went 2-for-3 in the game with the lone run scored. Fellow senior Vicky Lattanzio finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and a hit-by-pitch. Sophomore Ashley Quidolit Rabago and juniors Nicole Yozzo, Carolyn Wright and Katie Schultz each added hits for Lehigh.
"When we had to make plays, we made plays," said Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan. "Certainly he story of the game was the way Emily Sorem was in command. Any time you throw a two-hitter and are working ahead in the count most of the time, that's always a good situation. To come back and pitch so well again after pitching so well yesterday, it's a real credit to her. You never know what inning's going to be the big inning. For us, it was the first inning today."
Sorem went the distance, striking out a season-high six batters on her way to her seventh win of the year against six losses.
It didn't take long for Lehigh to grab the lead as it scored in the first inning. Cole hit an opposite field double off the left fielder's glove for Lehigh's first hit of the game. After advancing to third on a groundout by freshman Mary-Hannah Smith, Lattanzio knocked her in with a double of her own in the left-center field gap.
Sorem faced only a couple of jams in the game. She escaped a first and second situation in the third by striking out Halle Mariano to end the inning. The sophomore faced her biggest challenge in the seventh, allowing a leadoff double. After a sacrifice bunt attempt was popped up and caught by Wright behind the plate, the tying run advanced to third on a groundout to shortstop. Sorem buckled down and struck out pinch-hitter Lauren Lichtenwalner to give the Mountain Hawks the victory.
The Mountain Hawks finish up their seven-game homestand this Wednesday when they host the Fordham Rams in a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
"It's a big weekend, but every weekend is big," said Troyan. "To a certain extent, we're playing against ourselves. We're just trying to play as well as we possibly can. Even though we were fortunate enough to come out on top in three hard-fought games, every game is just as important as this one. We respect the game, respect our opponents and play to the best of our abilities. The team is really buying into that."
