
Lehigh hosts A-10 leader Fordham in non-league doubleheader Wednesday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team has won 11 of its last 12 games, including an 8-1 stretch in Patriot League play to take over the top spot in the league standings. On Wednesday, Lehigh welcomes Atlantic 10 front runner Fordham to Leadership Park with a doubleheader set for 2:30 p.m.
Lehigh moved into first place in the league standings following a three-game weekend sweep of Bucknell, who came in at 6-0. In Saturday's series opener, Bucknell took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a two-RBI single. The Mountain Hawks went on to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth when freshman Mary-Hannah Smith doubled to center field to drive in two runs. The game went into extra innings, lasting until the 11th when freshman Reva Alderman's RBI double gave Lehigh a 3-2 win. Four players recorded two hits for Lehigh, and Christine Campbell pitched all 11 innings to earn her 10th win of the season.
The Mountain Hawks posted a 5-0 shutout in game two Saturday behind two hits and two RBIs from Alderman. Sophomore Emily Sorem threw her first of two consecutive two-hit shutouts in the pitcher's circle.
In Sunday's series finale, Sorem threw another two-hitter, striking out six, as Lehigh picked up a 1-0 win. The lone run came in the bottom of the first inning when senior Vicky Lattanzio doubled to left center to drive in classmate Ashley Cole, who led the team with two hits on the day.
Lehigh enters the Fordham doubleheader at 18-15 overall. The Mountain Hawks are 8-0 at Leadership Park and will be closing out a seven game home stand. Junior Nicole Yozzo's .352 batting average leads the Mountain Hawks while Alderman remains in the team lead at 22 RBIs after recording three in the Bucknell series. Campbell and Sorem both rank in the top five in the Patriot League in ERA with Campbell sitting at 1.99 and Sorem at 2.25.
Fordham is 29-9 overall this season and leads the Atlantic 10 at 7-2 in conference play, most recently winning two of three games in a series over the weekend against George Mason. The Rams will host Iona in a single game Tuesday. Jessica Hughes leads the Rams with a .400 batting average in 36 games, recording seven doubles, four triples and eight home runs. Shaw is hitting .370 with a team-high 46 RBIs. Fordham has been strong in the pitcher's circle as the Rams have a 1.95 team ERA, led by Lauren Quense, who has a 1.72 ERA and a 15-5 record.
The Mountain Hawks are 17-11 all-time against Fordham. The teams met earlier this year on March 3 at the Homewood Suites Invitational in Raleigh, N.C. Lehigh led 2-0 early but Fordham rallied for a 4-2 victory. Yozzo had two hits, while Alderman picked up a RBI.
Wednesday's doubleheader will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
