Lehigh to visit Villanova for Wednesday non-league doubleheader

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh softball team has won six straight games and 12 of its past 13 as it enters a road doubleheader against Villanova on Wednesday. Game one is set to begin at 3 p.m. at the Villanova Softball Complex.
Most recently, the Mountain Hawks defeated Albany 14-5, scoring 11 runs in the first inning in the home win on Saturday. The team managed to score 14 runs on just eight hits — and those eight hits came from seven different players. Albany took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning before Lehigh blitzed the Great Danes for its 11-run first inning. The scoring that inning was capped off by a grand slam by freshman Mary-Hannah Smith. Albany came back with four runs in the top of the second inning before Lehigh responded with three more runs in the bottom of the third. Senior Christine Campbell pitched all five innings of the game, striking out a season-high nine batters. The second game of the doubleheader was canceled due to poor field conditions.
Lehigh comes into Wednesday's doubleheader with a 25-16 overall record and is 11-1 in the Patriot League. Sophomore Ashley Quidolit Rabago leads the team in batting average with a .347 mark, racking up 13 RBIs and a team-high 41 hits. Smith has a team-high eight doubles, adding a .333 batting average. Carolyn Wright leads the team with 30 RBIs this season. Campbell leads the team's pitching efforts with a 15-4 record and a 1.98 ERA.
Villanova is 29-15 overall and 9-6 in the Big East, most recently winning two of three games in a series against St. John's over the weekend. The Wildcats clinched the series with an 8-0 perfect game by senior Brette Lawrence, who struck out four batters in six innings. Junior Nikki Alden leads Villanova in batting average thus far at .396 in 40 starts, totaling a team-high nine home runs and 37 RBIs. Senior Lauren Herschberg is another top hitter for the Wildcats, hitting a .340 average in 44 games, adding 11 doubles, two triples and five home runs. Lawrence is their top pitcher, posting a 2.34 ERA in 167.1 innings, recording 150 strikeouts.
All-time, Villanova holds a 28-19-1 lead in the series against Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks won the last meeting between the two teams, a 7-1 victory in 2015 in the inaugural game at Leadership Park. It was Lehigh's first win against Villanova since 2007.
Following Wednesday's doubleheader, Lehigh will come back home for a three-game Patriot League series against Army West Point on Saturday and Sunday. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday and a single game Sunday with action both days set for a noon start. Lehigh's three seniors will also be recognized prior to Sunday's single game.
