VILLANOVA, Pa. – Powered by a pair of outstanding pitching performances, the Lehigh softball team extended its winning streak to eight games by sweeping a doubleheader from Villanova Wednesday at the Villanova Softball Complex. Senior Christine Campbell fired a five-hit shutout in game one, as Lehigh scored two late runs to win 2-0. Sophomore Emily Sorem followed Campbell by going the distance on a three-hitter as the Mountain Hawks captured the nightcap 4-0.
Senior Vicky Lattanzio and junior Rachel Timberman both drove in runs in both games as Lehigh improves to 27-16 on the season.
Game one matched Campbell and Villanova's Brette Lawrence, who was coming off a perfect game against St. John's on Sunday. Campbell gave up five hits over the first three innings but retired the final 15 batters she faced. Lehigh had three hits against Lawrence through five and broke through with a run in the sixth to take the lead.
Junior Carolyn Wright singled with one out in the top of the sixth, and after Lawrence fanned freshman Reva Alderman for the second out, she issued two walks to load the bases. Lawrence then walked Timberman, forcing in Wright from third to give the Mountain Hawks a 1-0 lead.
Lehigh tacked on a second run in the seventh as senior Ashley Cole led off with a single up the middle and two batters later came around to score on a double to center by Lattanzio.
The shutout was Campbell's second of the season as she improved to 16-4. She struck out five and did not issue a walk.
Wright and Cole combined for four of Lehigh's six hits against Lawrence, who also walked six and struck out six.
Sorem didn't have to wait as long for her run support in game two as the Mountain Hawks plated a run in the second, two in the third and one in the fourth to support her third complete-game shutout of the season.
Wright started Lehigh's rally in the second inning with a leadoff single. After a pop out and an error, sophomore Brianna Gerhardt singled home pinch runner Lexi van Ooyen with Lehigh's first run.
Cole and Lattanzio teamed up in the third inning of game two as Cole again led off with a single and came around to score on a Lattanzio one-out double. Running for Lattanzio, sophomore Jennifer Stoll scored on a double by Timberman as Lehigh extended its lead to 3-0.
Gerhardt laced a double with one out in the fourth and scored Lehigh's fourth run on an infield single by classmate Ashley Quidolit Rabago.
Sorem faced the minimum through the first four innings, allowing just a Brittany Husk single, but Husk was thrown out stealing by Emily Preble.
Villanova's other two hits were a two-out single by Caroline Jones in the fifth and a leadoff single by Chase Snell in the sixth.
Sorem struck out five and walked one in her outing as she improves to 9-7 on the season.
Jordan Prutzer allowed four runs on seven hits in four innings before giving way to Caitlyn Dickman who held Lehigh hitless in three scoreless innings of relief. The losses dropped Villanova to 29-17 on the season.
The Mountain Hawks will return to Patriot League play this weekend when they host Army West Point for three games at Leadership Park. A doubleheader is slated for Saturday followed by a single game on Sunday with action both days set for a noon start.
