Mountain Hawks host Army West Point in final home Patriot League series

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – As the Lehigh softball team nears the end of the regular season, it still sits atop the Patriot League standings with six league games to go. Going in with an 11-1 league record (27-16 overall), Lehigh will take on Army West Point (10-5 in the league) in a three-game series Saturday and Sunday. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday with first pitch both days set for noon.
Prior to Sunday's game, Lehigh will honor its three member senior class: Christine Campbell, Ashley Cole and Vicky Lattanzio. It will also be Youth Day, where kids will get a chance to meet the players after the game and get autographs.
Most recently, the Mountain Hawks won a pair of shutouts against Villanova on Wednesday, winning 2-0 and 4-0. In the first game, Lehigh didn't score until the sixth inning when junior Rachel Timberman walked with the bases loaded, allowing classmate Carolyn Wright to score. Then Lattanzio hit an RBI double in the seventh inning to close out the team's 2-0 win. Campbell earned a shutout in seven innings, striking out six and allowing five hits.
In the second game, Lehigh scored all of its runs between the second and fourth innings, including RBI doubles by Lattanzio and Timberman in the third inning. Sophomore pitcher Emily Sorem allowed just three hits in seven innings, striking out five batters along the way.
Ashley Quidolit Rabago is the team's leader in batting average at .333 in 42 games, adding 14 stolen bases in 15 attempts. Wright leads the team with 30 RBIs, recording a .307 batting average and seven doubles. Campbell has a 16-4 record with a 1.87 ERA in 130.2 innings while Sorem has a 2.09 ERA in 104 innings.
Lehigh is 84-36 overall against Army West Point, winning two of four games last year. Lehigh won two of three games in the regular season series before Army won 3-1 in Bethlehem in the Patriot League Tournament to eliminate the Mountain Hawks.
Army West Point sits at 33-16 overall after sweeping a doubleheader at Marist on Thursday, winning 6-4 and then 2-1. The Black Knights are third in the league standings after sweeping three games from Bucknell last weekend. Boston University is in second with a 9-3 league record and will host last-place Colgate in a three-game series this weekend. Lehigh has already clinched a spot in the Patriot League Tournament and needs any combination of wins or Boston University losses equaling four to clinch the regular season title. Holy Cross will host Bucknell in a three-game series this weekend as well.
Ashley Yoo leads the Black Knights with a .352 average, while Emily Ballesteros has a team-best 30 RBIs. Army West Point features a veteran pitching staff, led by sophomore Renee Poirier, who is 13-6 with a 1.91 ERA. Caroline Smith and Kristen West are the Black Knights' next two pitchers in terms of innings pitched, wins and ERA.
Following this weekend's series, Lehigh will play a doubleheader against Hofstra in its final non-league games of the regular season Wednesday. The first game is set for 2 p.m. at Leadership Park. The Mountain Hawks will close out the regular season with three games at Colgate next weekend.
