BETHLEHEM, Pa – A wild first inning provided all the offense the Lehigh softball team needed on Saturday, as the Mountain Hawks defeated Albany 14-5 in five innings. Freshman Mary-Hannah Smith capped off the inning with a grand slam, as Lehigh scored 11 times in the frame to take control. Smith finished the day reaching base three times with four RBIs and scored three runs. Junior Carolyn Wright collected three RBIs and sophomore Ashley Quidolit Rabago knocked in two runs and scored twice. Sophomore Brianna Gerhardt had two hits and knocked in a run, while senior Vicky Lattanzio, freshman Lexi van Ooyen, and sophomore Brianna Gerhardt each drove in one run apiece. With the win, the Mountain Hawks improve to 25-16 on the season, while the Great Danes drop to 18-15.

Game two of Saturday's scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to heavy rain and unplayable field conditions.

Albany jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning after back-to-back hits to open the game, but Lehigh came right back in the bottom of the frame, sending 14 batters to the plate, including eight before a single out was recorded.

Junior Nicole Yozzo led off with an infield single, and after two straight walks to senior Ashley Cole and Smith, Lattanzio and Rabago both knocked in runs and reached base on two straight errors by the Albany third baseman. Wright then walked with the bases loaded to make it 3-1, and van Ooyen followed with an RBI single to make it a 4-1 game. Up next, Gerhardt grounded an infield single to the first baseman to knock in one run, with a second runner scoring on the play following a throwing error. van Ooyen then scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-1 before Albany recorded the first out of the inning on a pop up.

Junior Cassie Lajeunesse and Cole drew back-to-back walks to reload the bases, forcing an Albany pitching change. Smith greeted the new pitcher by smacking a 2-2 pitch down the left-field line and around the pole for a grand slam. All told, Lehigh scored 11 runs on four hits, five walks, and took advantage of three Albany errors in the inning.

Albany was able to cut into the lead in the second inning, scoring four runs on four hits to get back within 11-5 courtesy of a two-run double and two-run homer, but that was as close as they would get.

After a quiet bottom of the second, Lehigh tacked on three more runs in the third. After LU had a runner cut down at the plate for the second out, Rabago delivered a clutch RBI single to left field to score Smith, who had walked earlier in the inning. Wright then stepped up and knocked in Rabago and Lattanzio with a single to center field to cap the game's scoring and make it 14-5.

Senior starter Christine Campbell was able to keep the Great Danes off the scoreboard over the final three innings, earning the complete game victory with nine strikeouts to improve to 15-5 on the year.

Lehigh will now travel to Villanova to face the Wildcats in another non-league doubleheader on Wednesday, April 26. First pitch is set for 3 p.m.
