BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The first four Patriot League Women's Golf Championships have produced four different team champions. The Lehigh women's golf team will bid to become the first team to win two Patriot League titles, when the Mountain Hawks host the two-day, 54-hole championship Saturday and Sunday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club.
Â
Lehigh is one of six teams vying for the Patriot League title and the automatic berth for the NCAA Women's Golf Championship. Teams will play 36 holes on Saturday, with round one tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m. and 18 holes on Sunday, also beginning at 8:30 a.m.
Â
The Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club will play to 6,012 yards and a par 72. Joining Lehigh will be Boston University, Bucknell, Holy Cross, Navy and Richmond.
Â
The Mountain Hawks won the inaugural championship in 2013 at Bucknell and are hosting for the second time. Lehigh previously hosted in 2014, finishing third. The Mountain Hawks finished second in 2015 and third last year. Richmond is the defending champion, while Bucknell (2014) and Boston University (2015) have also won team titles.
Â
Last year at Bucknell, Lehigh posted a total of 921, its best score in four championship appearances, finishing eight strokes behind Richmond and two behind Boston U. Three Mountain Hawks earned All-Patriot League honors, led by current sophomore Aileen Jeong, who finished second overall and was named Patriot League Rookie of the Year. Current senior Elizabeth McGarrigle also was a first team all-league honoree after tying for fourth place, while current sophomore Reagan Jahn earned second team all-league honors by tying for ninth place.
Â
The Patriot League championship features a play six, score four format. The individual champion will be named the Patriot League Women's Golfer of the Year, while the highest finishing freshman receives the sport's Rookie of the Year honor. Head coaches from all six schools will vote on the Patriot League Coach of the Year award.
Â
There will also be a 10-member All-Patriot League Team based on finish at the championship. The top five finishers (including ties) make the first-team squad, and all remaining finishers up to 10th place (including ties) qualify for the second-team.
Â
The returning all-league trio of Jeong, McGarrigle and Jahn will hold down the top three spots in Lehigh's lineup. Jeong will play in the No. 1 position, Jahn will play at No. 2 and McGarrigle will compete at No. 3. The remainder of Lehigh's lineup features freshman Minuette Laessig at No. 4, junior Megan Moylan at No. 5 and freshman Rebecca Markunas at No. 6.
Â
In its most recent action, Lehigh finished second at the 12 team Navy Spring Invitational. A balanced effort saw Lehigh place four players in the top 20, with Jahn and Laessig leading the way by tying for 10th place.
Â
Lehigh's 2016-17 campaign has been highlighted by a first place finish in the nine-team Lehigh Invitational, which was played on the same Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club in October. McGarrigle and Jeong tied for top honors at 10 over par 154, with McGarrigle winning the tiebreaker to claim medalist honors.
Â
Jahn has posted or tied for Lehigh's top individual finish at its last three spring tournaments: the Seminole State Spring Break, the Kingsmill Intercollegiate and the Navy Spring Invitational.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will play with Richmond and Boston University on Saturday with first tee times going off the first hole at 8:30 a.m. for the first round and the 10th hole at 1 p.m. for round two.
