EASTON, Pa. – Junior Carolyn Wright drove in three runs and sophomore Emily Sorem was strong in the circle as the Lehigh softball team opened its rivalry series at Lafayette with a 4-1 lead over the Leopards Saturday at Metzgar Fields.
Wright's first-inning two-run single proved to be enough but the Mountain Hawks added a fourth-inning bases loaded walk and a Wright sacrifice fly in the fifth to win their fifth straight overall and improve to 4-0 in Patriot League play. Lehigh is now 12-14 overall, while Lafayette falls to 2-11 overall and 0-4 in the league.
Lehigh was out-hit by Lafayette 5-4 but the Mountain Hawks drew six walks and had two batters hit by pitches. Each team committed one error.
The Mountain Hawks loaded the bases without the aid of a hit with one out in the first. After a fielder's choice kept the bases loaded with two outs, Wright singled through the left side, scoring freshman Mary-Hannah Smith and senior Vicky Lattanzio to give the Mountain Hawks a 2-0 lead.
Lafayette used a two-out rally to score its run in the bottom of the third as Samantha Sweigart reached on an infield single and then came around to score on a Jenna Orlando double.
In the fourth, Lehigh used a walk and two singles to load the bases with two outs. Senior Ashley Cole drew a walk to bring junior Katie Schultz home with Lehigh's third run.
A leadoff walk, a sacrifice and an error put runners on second and third with no outs in the fifth and Wright's sacrifice fly to center field scored pinch runner Jen Stoll to put Lehigh up 4-1.
In addition to Wright's RBI single, Lehigh's other hits belonged to juniors Nicole Yozzo and Rachel Timberman and sophomore Brianna Gerhardt. The Mountain Hawks left eight runners on base against Lafayette pitchers Kristyn Marinelli and Stephanie Thomas. Marinelli took the loss, while Thomas allowed just one hit in 2.2 scoreless innings of relief.
Sorem continued her resurgence allowing a run on five hits in a complete game effort with five strikeouts and zero walks as she improves to 4-6 on the season. Orlando had two of Lafayette's five hits to lead the Leopards.
The Mountain Hawks and Leopards will wrap-up their series with a doubleheader Sunday with first pitch for game one set for noon. Lafayette will offer video for both games on the Patriot League Network.
