BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team will resume Patriot League play this weekend with a three-game series against crosstown rival Lafayette.
Update: Due to inclement weather and field conditions, the Mountain Hawks and Leopards will now play a single game Saturday, beginning at 3 p.m. and a doubleheader Sunday with first pitch for game one set for noon.
Lehigh enters Saturday's series with a mark of 11-14 overall and 3-0 in Patriot League play. The Mountain Hawks are fresh off a three-game sweep of Boston University to begin the league portion of their schedule. The Mountain Hawks had extra time to rest up and prepare for the rivalry matchup after their doubleheader with Penn, scheduled for Tuesday, was cancelled due to rain.
After the Lehigh offense started slowly in non-league play, the Mountain Hawks' bats came alive in their Patriot League opening series. Lehigh tallied 30 runs and 37 hits including seven homers in the three-game set. Three of the seven home runs came from the bat of senior Vicky Lattanzio. Lattanzio garnered Patriot League Player of the Week honors after going 4-for-10 at the plate and driving a team-high nine RBIs in addition to her three homers.
Freshman Mary-Hannah Smith and sophomore Nicole Yozzo have helped lead the offense. A 7-for-11 performance against Boston University helped Smith capture Patriot League Rookie of the Week honors. Smith leads Lehigh with a .367 average and five doubles, while Yozzo is not far behind with a .365 average, team-best 23 hits and 10 stolen bases.
In the circle, senior Christine Campbell leads the Mountain Hawks with a 7-4 record with a 2.52 ERA. Campbell has also thrown four complete games and a team-high 36 strikeouts.
Lafayette comes in at 2-10 overall and 0-3 in league play. The Leopards' two victories came against Morgan State on March 5 and St. Peter's in their last game on Tuesday. Lafayette was swept by Bucknell on the road in its Patriot League series opener and was outscored 14-2 in the three games. The 5-4 win over St. Peter's was also Lafayette's home opener.
Maddie Wensel leads Lafayette with a .263 batting average and is tied for the team lead in RBIs with three. Stacy Gordon has earned the win in both of Lafayette's victories, while Kristyn Marinelli leads the pitching staff in ERA (5.01) and strikeouts (6).
Lehigh will look to continue its recent dominance in the rivalry. The Mountain Hawks have won 11 straight games against the Leopards including a three-game sweep at Leadership Park last spring. Lehigh leads the all-time series with a 92-23 overall mark.
Lafayette will offer video for all three games on the Patriot League Network.
Following this weekend's series, Lehigh will return to Leadership Park for a seven-game home stand beginning Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks host Saint Joseph's in a doubleheader with first pitch for game one set for 3 p.m.
