Mountain Hawks blank Lafayette 18-0 in Sunday opener to clinch rivalry series win

EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team amassed season highs in runs and hits in a dominant 18-0, five-inning win over Lafayette Sunday in the first game of a doubleheader at Metzgar Fields. The victory clinched the three-game series for the Mountain Hawks, but the Leopards were able to salvage the final game of the series, scoring twice in the sixth inning to defeat Lehigh 3-1.

Sophomore Ashley Quidolit Rabago led Lehigh in the doubleheader, going 4-for-5 in the two games with two runs scored and two RBI. While Lehigh was pounding out 21 hits in game one, senior Christine Campbell limited Lafayette to just one in the five inning shutout. After two weekends of league play, Lehigh is now 13-15 overall and 5-1 in the league. The game two loss snapped a six game winning streak for the Mountain Hawks. Lafayette is now 3-12 overall and 1-5 in the Patriot League.

Lehigh jumped on its arch rival early in game one. Lafayette's Stacy Gordon retired junior Nicole Yozzo to open the game but the Mountain Hawks then strung together six straight hits with RBI singles by senior Vicky Lattanzio, Rabago and freshman Reva Alderman putting Lehigh up 4-0. Alderman's singled chased Gordon from the game and sophomore Brianna Gerhardt greeted Kristyn Marinelli with a sacrifice fly to put the Mountain Hawks up 5-0 before the hosts came to bad.

It was more of the same for the Mountain Hawks in the second as after Yozzo was retired, Lehigh plated seven runs on eight hits to go up 12-0. Senior Ashley Cole reached on a one out single to third base and freshman Mary-Hannah Smith followed with a two run home run to center, the first homer of her career, to give Lehigh a 7-0 lead. Rabago and junior Carolyn Wright drove in runs with hits before Lafayette was able to record the second out but Gerhardt and juniors Rachel Timberman and Cassie Lajeunesse came through with three consecutive two-out hits to cap the seven run frame.

The Mountain Hawks added a run in the third on an Alderman RBI single and after being kept off the scoreboard in the fourth, batted around in the fifth, plating five more runs before Campbell worked around a leadoff error in the bottom of the fifth to close the game out.

The No. 2 spot in Lehigh's batting order went 5-for-5 in the opener, with Cole going 2-for-2 and junior Lindsay Phillips going 3-for-3. Smith, Rabago, Wright, Alderman and Timberman all contributed two hits as well with Alderman and Gerhardt leading the way with three RBI apiece.

Campbell faced the minimum 15 batters in five innings. Samantha Sweigart led off the bottom of the first with a single but was later called out for leaving first base early. Brooke Wensel reached on an error to lead off the fifth but was erased when Miranda Skurla lined into a double play. Campbell improved to 8-4 with her first shutout of the season, allowing one hit with no walks and six strikeouts.

Game two saw Lehigh out-hit Lafayette 7-4 and the Mountain Hawks had base runners in each of the first six innings, but Lehigh left seven runners on base and could only muster one run against Lafayette's Stephanie Thomas. Lehigh's lone run came in the fourth as Lattanzio was hit by a pitch and then Alderman singled home pinch runner Jen Stoll with two outs.

Freshman starter Parker Boyd had a relatively uneventful first three innings, but ran into trouble in the fourth, loading the bases on a walk, a double, a fielder's choice and a hit batter. A bases loaded walk to Skurla tied the game at 1-1 after four innings.

Sweigart led off the home sixth with a single and Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan went to his bullpen bringing in sophomore Emily Sorem. Sorem quickly picked up two outs with a strikeout and a Lafayette sacrifice but Brooke Wensel's single to right center brought home Sweigart with the go-ahead run. Skurla then doubled down the right field line to tack on an insurance run for the Leopards. Thomas then retired Lehigh in order for the first time in the game to clinch Lafayette's first win over Lehigh since 2013, snapping a 13-game Mountain Hawks winning streak in the series.

Yozzo and Rabago had two hits apiece to lead Lehigh but Thomas allowed just the one run and had no walks and one strikeout.

Boyd took the loss for Lehigh, allowing two runs on two hits in five innings. She walked two and struck out three as she falls to 1-5.

The Mountain Hawks will now be home for their next seven games, beginning Wednesday when Lehigh hosts Saint Joseph's in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. Next weekend, Lehigh will host Bucknell in a crucial three-game series. The Bison lead the Mountain Hawks by one game in the league standings after two weekends of play. Video of both the Saint Joseph's doubleheader and Bucknell series will be available on the Patriot League Network.
