BALTIMORE, Md. – The Lehigh women's basketball team's season came to an end on Saturday night in the first round of the Patriot League Tournament with a 78-50 loss at Loyola (Md.). Sophomore Meagan Eripret led the way for Lehigh with career-highs of 11 points and eight rebounds on 3-of-5 shooting, junior Bernadette Devaney tallied eight points, and freshman Hannah Hedstrom had six points, four rebounds, four assists and three blocks. Junior Quinci Mann chipped in four points and junior Mae Williams pulled down five rebounds. Loyola had four score in double figures, led by Lauren Daugherty with 21 points and Stephanie Karcz's double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds. Loyola (11-19) advances to take on Bucknell in Monday's quarterfinals, while Lehigh ends the season at 10-20 overall.
The Mountain Hawks finished the game shooting 37 percent (17-for-46), while the Greyhounds shot 48.3 percent overall and 52.2 percent (12-for-23) from three-point range. Lehigh committed 16 turnovers, while Loyola turned the ball over just seven times and tallied 19 assists. Both teams collected 19 rebounds.
Lehigh came out with a fast start and took an early 5-0 lead thanks to a three-pointer by Mann and a layup from Camryn Buhr. Three different Greyhounds followed with buckets to take a 7-5 lead before Buhr put in a jumper to knot the game 7-7. Molly Taylor and Daugherty added three points apiece to make the Loyola run 13-2 and take a 13-7 lead. A Hedstrom free throw and Devaney three cut it to 13-11 with 2:38 remaining in the quarter, before the Hounds ran off seven of the last nine points of the period to take a 20-13 lead into the second quarter.
Loyola exploded coming out of the break and ran off the first 10 points of the frame, highlighted by back-to-back threes from Bri Betz-White and Taylor. Williams broke the run for Lehigh with a fastbreak layup at 6:08 mark, and Eripret scored her first points of the night on a pair of free throws to make it 30-17. Lehigh got back within 10 following a Devaney jumper with 2:24 on the clock, and then back within eight after four straight points by Eripret with just over a minute remaining. Betz-White then put an exclamation point on the half with a buzzer-beating three-pointer, giving the Hounds a 37-26 lead at the halftime.
Eripret had six points in the second quarter to lead Lehigh at the half. The Mountain Hawks shot just 28.6 percent in the second quarter after shooting nearly 42 percent in the first.
After a quick Loyola bucket to begin the second half, Lehigh scored the next five, capped by a three-pointer from Hailey Pascoe to make it 39-31. Lehigh would get to within eight on two more occasions after a jumper by Hedstrom at 6:11 and a free throw at the 4:15 mark by Mann, which made it 44-36. But that would be as close as Lehigh got, as Loyola finished the quarter on a 14-3 run over the final four minutes to carry a 58-39 lead into the final quarter.
After scoring 13 points in each of the first three quarters, Lehigh was outscored 20-11 over the final 10 minutes, beginning with an 11-0 run by the Greyhounds to begin the quarter, bringing the score to 69-39. Eripret ended the stretch with a layup at the 6:20 mark, sparking a 7-2 run for the Mountain Hawks, which featured five points from Eripret and two from Gena Grundhoffer, making it 71-46.
Paige Galiani drained a three-pointer with 1:36 remaining to make it 75-49. Senior Kari Moffat then entered the game and drove the ball to the basket to draw a foul with 22 seconds left. She then hit one of her free throws to cap the scoring to bring the final to 78-50.
