Behind seven-run fifth inning, Lehigh rallies to complete series sweep of Boston U.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – On a weekend in which Lehigh's offense came to life, a seven-run fifth inning helped the Mountain Hawks rally for a 10-6 victory over Boston University Sunday at Leadership Park. Freshman Mary-Hannah Smith delivered the go-ahead three run double, while seniors Ashley Cole and Vicky Lattanzio both hit two-run home runs as the Mountain Hawks completed the three-game sweep of the Terriers in the league-opening series for both teams.

Lehigh finished with 10 runs on 13 hits on Sunday, and scored 30 runs on 37 hits, including seven home runs over the three-game series. The Mountain Hawks improve to 11-14 overall and 3-0 in the league, while the defending tournament champion Terriers open league play at 0-3 and fall to 8-18  overall.

"I was really impressed with how we went ahead and grabbed a three run lead and then fairly late in the game were resilient and kept their composure and stayed strong with their game plan," Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan said. "It shows that this team has a whole lot of fight."

After hitting five home runs in Saturday's doubleheader sweep, the Mountain Hawks picked up where they left off on Sunday. Junior Nicole Yozzo led off the bottom of the first with a single and Cole followed with a home run to center field, her second of the weekend and third of the season, to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead.

Kaitlyn Sahlinger's RBI single in the second got the Terriers on the board, but Lehigh scored a run in the bottom of the frame on Smith's bases-loaded RBI ground out.

Boston University pulled even with two runs in the third, thanks to a sacrifice fly and a run-scoring error. The Terriers then went ahead with three runs in the fifth. BU took the lead as Moriah Connolly stole third base in the front end of a double steal and then scored on a throwing error. The Terriers added two more runs in the inning to take a 6-3 lead.

Sophomore Ashley Quidolit Rabago led off the bottom of the fifth with a bunt single and then stole second base. An infield hit by junior Katie Schultz put runners on the corners with one out for freshman Reva Alderman, who delivered a pinch hit single to left to bring the Mountain Hawks within 6-4. Back-to-back walks to junior Rachel Timberman and junior Cassie Lajeunesse forced in a run to bring Lehigh within a run. BU's Kali Magane got Cole to ground into a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning but Smith hit a sharp line drive that got through the infield and into the right centerfield gap to clear the bases and give Lehigh an 8-6 lead.

"They've been with the program now for a long time," Troyan said. "The fact of the matter is we don't view them as freshmen anymore and both Reva and Mary-Hannah a pretty good players."

Lattanzio then went opposite field for her third home run of the series, which put the Mountain Hawks ahead 10-6.

Smith finished 3-for-4 with a career-high four RBIs for the Mountain Hawks, while the outfield trio of Yozzo, Rabago and Schultz each added two hits.

Senior Christine Campbell earned the win in relief of freshman Parker Boyd. Campbell allowed two runs on four hits in three innings with a pair of strikeouts. Boyd allowed four runs (three earned) on five hits in four-plus innings in her first Patriot League start.

"BU has got some very good hitters and really strong team," Troyan said. "Parker competed very hard today and did a nice job."

Connolly went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Terriers.

The Mountain Hawks will host Penn for a non-league doubleheader Tuesday at Leadership Park with first pitch for game one set for 2:30 p.m. Lehigh will continue league play next weekend at Lafayette.
