Lehigh captures 4-2 win over Grand Canyon to close out California trip

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Lehigh softball team ended its spring break trip to California on a high note, topping Grand Canyon 4-2 Saturday to close out the Santa Clara Round Robin. The Mountain Hawks scored three runs over the final two innings to claim the victory and earn a split on the final day of their trip. Lehigh's day began with a 7-1 loss to Long Beach State.
The Mountain Hawks will return home with a record of 8-14 on the season.
Lehigh out-hit Grand Canyon 11-7 in its second game of the day, with senior Ashley Cole, junior Cassie Lajeunesse and freshman Lexi van Ooyen registering two apiece.
The Mountain Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning when sophomore Brianna Gerhardt drew a bases loaded walk.
GCU (24-5) pulled even in the bottom of the fourth on a two-out RBI single by Madelyn Dowdle.
Lehigh threatened, but failed to score in the fifth but pushed across the go-ahead run in the sixth on a two-out double by sophomore Jen Stoll, followed by a pinch-hit RBI single by junior Carolyn Wright.
In the seventh, Lehigh extended its lead behind four consecutive two out hits. Van Ooyen singled through the right side to score Cole and then freshman Reva Alderman followed with a double to left that scored Lajeunesse.
The Lopes loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but sophomore Emily Sorem worked out of trouble, allowing just a sacrifice fly.
Sorem picked up the win allowing two runs on seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts. She improves to 2-6 on the season.
In Lehigh's first game of the day, Long Beach State (10-16-1) broke a 1-1 tie with five runs spread over the fourth and fifth innings.
The 49ers took an early 1-0 lead on a Julia Lombardi RBI single in the first inning but Lehigh answered in the bottom of the second when Stoll singled home sophomore Ashley Quidolit Rabago, who reached on an error.
LBSU pulled ahead in the fourth with two runs on a fielder's choice and a RBI ground out and added three more in the fifth, capped by a Lauren MacLeod two-run double. MacLeod drove in three runs to lead the 49ers, while Hannah Cookson was 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Long Beach State added a seventh run on a RBI double in the seventh.
Lehigh was limited to just five hits, including two by junior Nicole Yozzo.
Senior Christine Campbell started in the circle and took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on five hits in 4.1 innings. Freshman Parker Boyd went the rest of the way, allowing two runs, one of which was earned.
The Mountain Hawks are scheduled to play their first midweek doubleheader of the season on Wednesday when they travel to Delaware with first pitch for game one set for 2:30 p.m.
