TAMPA, Fla. – Freshman Matt Kravitz took home the top prize in the 1500 meter run on Saturday to highlight the day for Lehigh at the USF Bulls Invitational. The meet concludes the men's track and field team's weeklong trip to Florida to open up the outdoor track season.
Kravitz led the way in the 1500 meter run and broke the tape to win the race in 3:54.75. The event was the strongest of the day for the Mountain Hawks, who also had senior Ryan Cooney (3:57.66) land on the podium in third place and freshman Jeffrey Kirshenbaum finish fourth in 4:01.79.
"Matt was really good," said head coach Matt Utesch. "He's showing that he's quite a competitor as well so we're pretty pleased with that."
Freshman Joe Espinal finished just one hundredth of a second off the podium by finishing fourth overall in the 800m run in 1:53.50. Kravitz (1:56.87) and fellow freshman David Fletcher (1:57.29) also notched top 15 finishes by finishing 13th and 14th, respectively. Cooney was not far behind in 16th place (1:57.80).
Elsewhere on the track, juniors Trevor Knowles and Fritz Isaac both set new personal records in the 110 meter hurdles, where Isaac placed fourth in 15.29 seconds, and Knowles came in fifth in 15.43.
"Everyone who competed in the hurdles today PR-ed," Utesch said. "That's quite a big shift to make from the indoor hurdles. It's a much longer race when you first go out there."
Junior Michael Camera was Lehigh's lone runner in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, finishing 24th in the 100 (11.17) and 26th in the 200 (23.01).
Freshman Joey Kelly (4.37m) represented Lehigh in the pole vault with a seventh place finish. In the long jump, Knowles (6.55m) led the way for the Brown and White in 10th place, followed by freshman Oluwajuwon Owolabi (6.39m) in 12th place and Camera (6.38m) in 13th. Over in the triple jump, junior Michael Gooding (13.50m) led the way for the Mountain Hawks in ninth place.
"It's a little different because we have some race experience," Utesch said on the difference of the start of indoor track season versus the outdoor season. "But, because we have started our training over a bit and are bumping up our mileage again, we aren't as fresh as we were at the (indoor) Patriot League Championships, so we're starting to freshen up again. The next couple of weeks will be heavy, but we need to get back into a groove."
Lehigh will return to action next weekend with a pair of meets in the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina and the Lafayette 7-Way Invitational in Easton, Pa.
