Lehigh tops UConn in extra innings to finish Stanford Easton Classic on winning note

STANFORD, Calif. – Freshman Reva Alderman singled home junior Katie Schultz in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Lehigh a walk-off 2-1 win over UConn Sunday in the final game of the Stanford Easton Invitational at Smith Family Stadium. Senior Christine Campbell tossed a complete game and did not allow an earned run to help the Mountain Hawks snap a seven-game losing streak.
Lehigh dropped its opening game of the day 6-4 to host Stanford and now sits at 5-10 on the season.
UConn (6-10) grabbed the early lead when Kelli Bates scored on an Alderman error in the top of the first inning, but Lehigh battled back with a run in the bottom of the third inning. With one out, junior Rachel Timberman singled through the left side. After a bunt single from junior Nicole Yozzo, senior Ashley Cole doubled to left center, scoring Timberman with the tying run.
Both teams had chances to break the deadlock, with UConn turned aside in the fourth and sixth innings and Lehigh stranding three in the fourth and two in both the fifth and sixth innings. For the game, the Huskies left nine runners on base, while the Mountain Hawks stranded 12.
In the eighth inning the international tiebreaker was implemented. UConn sacrificed the go-ahead run to third base and when Chloe Kearns flew out to center for the second out, junior Ashley Quidolit Rabago threw potential go-ahead run Kiwi McDaniel out at the plate.
Schultz was placed on second to begin the bottom of the eighth, and after a sacrifice bunt by Quidolit Rabago, Alderman re-entered and ended the game with a single to center.
Campbell finished with a line of one unearned run on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts as she improves to 4-2 on the season. Jill Stockley took the loss in relief. Lehigh out-hit UConn 9-7 with Yozzo and Timberman recording two apiece.
Lehigh's first game of the day saw the Mountain Hawks break their lengthy scoreless streak but fall just short of erasing a five-run deficit.
Stanford (16-10) scored three two-out runs in the third and added two more in the fourth before Lehigh began its comeback.
Schultz led off the top of the fifth with a single and with runners on second and third and two outs, an infield single from Quidolit Rabago brought Schultz home to end a Lehigh scoreless streak that had reached 29 innings.
The Cardinal pulled a run back on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fifth but the Mountain Hawks responded with a three-run sixth to get back into the ballgame.
With runners on the corners and two outs, sophomore Brianna Gerhardt's single scored classmate Jen Stoll to bring Lehigh within 6-2. Alderman followed with a two-run double and Lehigh was back within two.
Quidolit Rabago led off the top of the seventh with her second hit, but with the tying run at the plate Carolyn Lee came out of the bullpen to retire the next three Mountain Hawks to end the game.
Stanford used four pitchers in the game, with Kiana Pancino earning the win after allowing a run on two hits in 4.1 innings of work.
Sophomore Emily Sorem started for Lehigh and took the loss, allowing five runs on seven hits in four innings.
The Mountain Hawks will continue their California trip on Tuesday with a single game at No. 23 California with first pitch set for 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT from Berkeley, Calif.
