No. 20/23 Cal breaks open pitcher's duel late to top Lehigh 3-0

BERKELEY, Calif. – Lehigh hung tough with No. 20/23 California through four and a half innings but the host Golden Bears pushed across two two-out runs in the fifth and one in the sixth to claim a 3-0 victory Tuesday at Levine-Fricke Field. Sophomore Emily Sorem matched zeroes with Cal's Stephanie Trzcinski in the early going and the Mountain Hawks matched the nationally-ranked Golden Bears with four hits, but were blanked for the fourth time in six spring break games.
Junior Nicole Yozzo had two of Lehigh's four hits, but the Mountain Hawks fall to 5-11 with the loss. Cal improves to 17-4.
Both pitchers faced the minimum threw four innings with Sorem allowing just a leadoff single to Linsday Rood, who was called out for leaving a base early and Trzcinski yielding a leadoff single to Yozzo in the fourth, but the junior was caught stealing.
Senior Vicky Lattanzio singled to open the fifth inning but Lehigh was unable to capitalize. Cal finally got to Sorem with a runner on second and two outs in the bottom of the fifth as Khala Taylor doubled home Vanessa Alvarez and then Bradie Fillmore singled home Taylor.
Lehigh tried to answer in the top of the sixth as Yozzo and senior Ashley Cole greeted reliever Zoe Conley with back-to-back two out infield singles, but Conley got freshman Mary-Hannah Smith to ground out to end the threat.
Cal added one more run in the bottom of the sixth on a Jazmyn Jackson solo home run off senior Christine Campbell.
Sorem took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits in 4.2 innings with a walk and three strikeouts, while Campbell yielded just a walk and the home run in 1.1 innings of work.
Trzcinski and Conley both allowed two hits to combine on the shutout. Trzcinski earned the win with four strikeouts in 5.2 innings. Conley earned the save with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief.
The Mountain Hawks continue their California trip with two games Wednesday in Stockton. Lehigh will take on UMass at 4 p.m. (ET) and round-robin host Pacific at 6:30 p.m. (ET). Live stats will be available for both games, while video for the Pacific game will also be available on TheW.tv.
