Lehigh downs Pacific 3-2 to earn split of Wednesday games in Stockton

3/15/2017 8:30:00 PM | Softball

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Lehigh softball team made a three-run first inning stand up as the Mountain Hawks topped Pacific 3-2 Wednesday in their second game of the day at the Tigers' Bill Simoni Field. RBI singles from freshman Reva Alderman and junior Carolyn Wright provided the run support as sophomore Emily Sorem picked up her first victory of the season.

The victory was a solid bounce-back for the Mountain Hawks, who dropped their first game of the day, committing five errors in a 6-1 loss to Massachusetts. The Wednesday split in Stockton left Lehigh at 6-12 overall on the season and 2-6 on its spring break trip.

Against Pacific (12-13), Lehigh sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the first inning. With runners on second and third and one out, Alderman singled to bring home sophomore Ashley Quidolit Rabago in from third base. Two batters later, Wright delivered a two-run single to right field, giving a Lehigh a 3-0 advantage after half an inning.

In all, five of Lehigh's 10 hits came in the first inning, and seven of the ten came in the first two frames.

Pacific pulled a run back on a fielder's choice in the third inning, and got back within a run in the sixth on a Cassidy Gustafson double to left center. With the tying run on second and just one out, Sorem worked out of trouble thanks to a comebacker and a fly out to right field.

The Tigers put the leadoff batter on in the seventh but after a sacrifice bunt, Sorem induced back-to-back foul outs to end the game. Sorem allowed two runs on 10 hits in a complete game effort to improve to 1-6 on the season. She walked one and did not strike out a batter.

Hailey Reed took the loss for Pacific. Four Lehigh players: Quidolit Rabago, Alderman, senior Ashley Cole and junior Katie Schultz recorded two hits against the Tigers.

Earlier Wednesday it was Lehigh that trailed 3-0 before coming to bat. Three first-inning errors plus an Ashton Wince two-out RBI single put the Mountain Hawks behind. Lehigh's lone run came in the bottom of the frame when junior Nicole Yozzo led off by reaching on an error and eventually came around to score when Alderman reached on an error.

UMass (6-14) added single runs in the second, fifth and seventh innings, while Lehigh mustered just four hits, three of which came from junior Lindsay Phillips, who went 3-for-3. Junior Rachel Timberman had Lehigh's other hit.

Senior Christine Campbell started against the Minutewomen and allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits in 4.1 innings. Freshman Parker Boyd allowed one unearned run over the final 2.2 innings.

For UMass, Meg Colleran limited Lehigh to one unearned run on four hits. She struck out five and walked one.

The Mountain Hawks will close out their spring break trip to California with four games over two days at the Santa Clara Round Robin. Lehigh will face Northwestern at 5 p.m. ET and host Santa Clara at 10 p.m. ET Friday from Santa Clara.
