SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Senior Christine Campbell overcame a shaky first inning to shut down Northwestern the rest of the way, limiting the Wildcats to no runs and two hits over the final six frames, while the Lehigh offense pushed across two runs in the fifth to open the Santa Clara Round Robin with a 2-1 win over Northwestern Friday at Santa Clara Softball Stadium.
The Mountain Hawks had to settle for a split however, as tournament host Santa Clara capitalized on five Lehigh errors, including three in a five-run seventh inning to rally for a 6-3 win.
With Friday's split, Lehigh stands at 7-13 on the season with one day left on its California trip.
Campbell gave up a run on two doubles and a hit batter against Northwestern (6-14), but settled in to put together a final line of a run on four hits with two strikeouts as she improves to 5-3 on the season.
Lehigh finished with seven hits in its opening game, three of which came in the decisive fifth inning. Junior Nicole Yozzo and senior Ashley Cole opened the inning with back-to-back singles. Freshman Mary-Hannah Smith then brought Yozzo home with the tying run on a ground out. Two batters later, sophomore Ashley Quidolit Rabago singled through the right side to plate Cole with the go-ahead run.
Campbell set down the Wildcats in order in the final two innings to close out the win.
Junior Rachel Timberman had two of Lehigh's seven hits against Northwestern.
Lehigh was one out away from a Friday sweep before things came undone against Santa Clara (7-15).
Junior Lindsay Phillips brought home Smith with a RBI single in the top of the first, only to see the Broncos answer in the bottom of the frame.
Smith singled with one out in the third and scored the go-ahead run when Phillips reached on an error.
In the fourth, freshman Lexi van Ooyen was hit by a pitch to open the frame and after a sacrifice bunt, a wild pitch and a walk, came in to score on a Quidolit Rabago ground out.
Lehigh had worked around two errors through the first six innings, but three errors in the seventh, two of which came with two outs, allowed the Broncos to come back. A RBI single, followed by the Mountain Hawks' fifth error of the game allowed Eleni Spirakis to score the tying run.
Sophomore Emily Sorem entered the game in relief of freshman Parker Boyd but served up a game-winning three-run home run to Geenamarie Bonilla.
Boyd was charged with five runs, only one of which was earned, on five hits in 6.2 innings. She struck out seven and walked two but falls to 1-4 on the season.
Ciara Gonzalez earned the win in relief for the Broncos.
Lehigh will close out the Santa Clara Round Robin and its spring break trip to California with two more games on Saturday. The Mountain Hawks will face Long Beach State at 12 p.m. (ET) and then Grand Canyon at 2:30 p.m. (ET) before returning home to Bethlehem.
