Offense can't get going as Lehigh drops two Saturday at Stanford Easton Classic

3/11/2017 11:56:00 PM | Softball

STANFORD, Calif. – Senior Christine Campbell threw a strong game in the circle, but Lehigh's bats could not get untracked as the Mountain Hawks dropped a tight 2-0 decision to Pac-12 member Stanford Saturday in Lehigh's first game of the day at the Stanford Easton Classic Saturday at Smith Family Stadium. The Mountain Hawks out-hit the host Cardinal 7-5 but were shut out for the second straight game. Lehigh's offensive woes continued in its second game of the day as Grand Canyon claimed a 11-0, five inning victory.

The Mountain Hawks fall to 4-9 with the losses and have not scored since the first inning of last Sunday's game with N.C. State, a span of 25 innings.

Junior Nicole Yozzo paced the Lehigh offense with three hits in seven at-bats but the Mountain Hawks left 14 runners on base across Saturday's two games.

Campbell allowed two runs on five hits in six innings against Stanford (15-9) with two walks and six strikeouts.

Stanford's two runs came on a Lauren Wegner RBI fielder's choice in the fourth inning and a sixth-inning RBI double by Arden Pettit.

The top four hitters in Lehigh's lineup combined for six of its seven hits and the Mountain Hawks had base runners in every inning but could not put a run across. In the fourth inning Lehigh had two on with one out and later loaded the bases with two outs but Nikki Bauer got junior Rachel Timberman to ground out to end the threat. Lehigh also put the first two batters on in the fifth but after a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position Haley Snyder got out of the jam by inducing a pair of lineouts.

In Saturday's second game, Grand Canyon (23-3) tagged Lehigh pitching for 11 runs on 11 hits. Bianca Boiling gave the Lopes a 1-0 lead with a second-inning RBI single. GCU later broke the game open with three runs in the third, three more in the fourth and four in the fifth. Camree Wartman went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Megan Stevens had a pinch-hit three-run double.

Briana Aguilar threw a five-inning five-hitter with two strikeouts to earn the win.

Freshman Parker Boyd threw the first four innings for Lehigh, allowing seven runs on nine hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Senior Vicky Lattanzio pitched the fifth inning and allowed four runs, only one of which was earned.

The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up action at the Stanford Easton Classic on Sunday with a rematch against Stanford at 2:45 p.m. ET and a game against Connecticut at 7:15 p.m.
