Lehigh downs Georgia Southern to claim split on day two of Citrus Classic

ORLANDO, Fla. – Lehigh used a five-run top of the seventh inning to break a 4-4 tie in a 9-4 win over Georgia Southern Saturday at the Citrus Classic. The win extended the Mountain Hawks' season-opening win streak to three, but the streak came to an end in Lehigh's second game of the day as Syracuse claimed a 9-2 victory.
Freshman Reva Alderman delivered the go-ahead RBI against the Eagles, while five different players recorded two hits on the day to lead Lehigh, which stands at 3-1 after two days in its 2017 campaign.
In its first game of the day Lehigh raced to a 4-0 lead against Georgia Southern (6-7), scoring three runs in the second and one in the third. Sophomore Brianna Gerhard came through with a two-run double to left center to put the Mountain Hawks in front and junior Rachel Timberman followed with a RBI single. In the third inning, a sacrifice fly by sophomore Ashley Quidolit Rabago played Alderman with an unearned run to put Lehigh up by four.
Georgia Southern battled back, scoring two runs in the fourth and two more in the fifth to tie the game at 4-4.
The Mountain Hawks opened the top of the seventh with three consecutive singles, the last of which by Alderman scored Cole to give Lehigh a 5-4 lead. After a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third, back-to-back Eagle errors allowed Lehigh to tack on two runs. Junior Carolyn Wright added a RBI ground out and sophomore Jen Stoll, who hit a ground ball to first base that turned into two runs earlier, scored on a wild pitch to give Lehigh a five-run advantage.
Senior Christine Campbell worked around a one-out error in the bottom of the seventh to close out the victory. Campbell earned her second win in as many days, throwing three innings of four hit relief, allowing two runs while striking out two. Sophomore Emily Sorem started and threw 3.2 innings of five hit ball but was not charged with any runs.
Cole led Lehigh with two hits against the Eagles, while the Mountain Hawks benefitted from four Georgia Southern errors.
Syracuse halted Lehigh's streak in the second game of the day, putting up nine runs on 14 hits. The Orange tagged freshman starter Parker Boyd for nine runs (eight earned) in three-plus innings. Syracuse put up five runs in the second inning and added one in the third and three in the fourth inning. Bryce Holmgren went 4-for-4 with two RBIs for Syracuse (7-5) while Sammy Fernandez went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in.
Lehigh pulled a run back in the bottom of the second when junior Nicole Yozzo reached on an error with two outs, allowing junior Katie Schultz to score. The Mountain Hawks avoided the eight-run rule, loading the bases with nobody out in the fifth before Stoll scored on a wild pitch for the second time on the day. Lehigh mustered six hits against the Orange with five of the six coming over the final three innings.
Campbell came on to throw four innings of scoreless relief, scattering five hits while striking out two.
The Mountain Hawks will wrap-up action at the Citrus Classic on Sunday when they take on No. 3 Florida with game time set for 9:30 a.m.
