LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Lehigh senior Patrick Reilly is in Louisville, Kentucky ready to compete at the NCAA Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning. Reilly is the fourth male in program history to qualify for the NCAA Championships, and the first since 2014.
Â
Due to expected inclement weather in the area, the day's events are now scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. with the women's 6K championship race, followed by the men's 10K championship at 10 a.m. Both races will take place at E.P. "Tom" Sawyer Park in Louisville, which previously hosted the national championship meet in 2012 and 2015. The race will be streamed live and archived on FloTrack.com, with live results available here. The women's and men's races had originally been scheduled for 9:45 a.m. and 10:45 a.m., respectively.
Â
The men's race will feature approximately 250 runners from across the nation, with the top 40 placers earning All-America honors. Lehigh's most recent national qualifier was Ryan Mahalsky '15, who holds Lehigh's highest-ever finish at nationals with a 46th place finish at the 2014 national championships in 31:03.7. Previously, Tyler Mueller qualified in 2013 and finished 67th overall in 31:07, and Evans Kosgei finished 112th out of 246 runners at the 2010 national championships with a time of 31:17.8.
Â
Reilly has put together a tremendous senior campaign for the Mountain Hawks this season, most recently tying Mahalsky's school record for the highest finish by a Lehigh runner at the NCAA Regional meet by placing fifth overall, the highest placement for a Patriot League runner at the meet. His 10K regional time of 30:39.4 bested his previous 10K PR by 1:05.3. Reilly has led the Lehigh pack in six of his seven meets this season, and twice was named the Patriot League's Runner of the Week.
Â
He began the season by capturing his first collegiate victory at the Lehigh Invitational (18:38.02-6K), finishing first out of 88 runners. After winning the Lehigh-Lafayette dual meet in 26:05.52 (8K), Reilly then placed 21st overall out of 156 runners at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown in 24:46.1. In the Gold Race at the Paul Short Run, Reilly ran the fastest time ever by a Lehigh male on the 8K course at Goodman Campus with a time of 23:57.0, placing 18th overall out of 359 runners in a race that featured multiple nationally ranked teams and some of the top runners from across the country. He later went on to place seventh overall at the Penn State National Open and 25th at the Patriot League Championships.
Â
The Patriot League will be well represented at the NCAA Championships with the Navy men's team qualifying for the meet after a second place finish at regionals. Individually, Reilly will be joined by Boston University's Paul Luevano, Army West Point's John Valeri, and Bucknell's Christine Bendzinski at the championships.
