BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The last two Patriot League football champions meet at Andy Kerr Stadium Saturday in the league opener for both teams as defending champion Lehigh visits 2015 champion Colgate. The Mountain Hawks are starting with a clean slate after going 0-5 through the non-league schedule. Lehigh showed some defensive improvement at Wagner but five offensive turnovers combined with several big plays allowed proved to be the difference in a 37-20 setback. Junior Dominick Bragalone posted his first 100-yard rushing game of the season, while receivers Troy Pelletier and Jorge Portorreal both eclipsed the 100-yard mark.
Lehigh and Colgate both open their Patriot League schedules on Saturday. The two most successful programs in league history, Lehigh and Colgate have won or shared a combined 19 league titles, including the Raiders in 2015 and the Mountain Hawks in 2016. Lehigh has enjoyed pretty good success in league openers under Andy Coen as the Mountain Hawks are 8-3 in their first game against a league opponent since 2006. The Mountain Hawks lost the 2014 league opener to Bucknell at home, and also lost their first game against a league foe in 2013 at Fordham, but the loss to the Rams did not count against the league standings at that time. Prior to 2014, the last time Lehigh started league play at 0-1 was 2007.
With junior quarterback Brad Mayes at the controls, Lehigh boasts the No. 2-ranked passing offense in the FCS averaging 362.6 yards per game. Mayes leads the FCS with 1,794 passing yards and ranks second in yards per game (358.8) and touchdown passes (14). He has eclipsed the 300-yard passing mark in each of Lehigh's first five games and was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week after throwing for 406 yards and four touchdowns against Villanova. Mayes will look to rebound from a tough outing against Wagner where he threw five interceptions and failed to throw a touchdown pass. Mayes has rushed for a touchdown in each of Lehigh's last two games.
After rushing for 1,008 yards and earning Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors as a freshman, tailback Dominick Bragalone put together another outstanding campaign in 2016, rushing for 1,171 yards and 14 touchdowns to earn first team All-Patriot League honors. Bragalone had four 100-yard rushing games, highlighted by a career-best 192-yard, three touchdown effort against Fordham. The South Williamsport, Pa. native owns 11 career 100-yard rushing games and joins Rabih Abdullah '97 as the only Lehigh runners to post two 1,000-yard rushing seasons. After missing the Yale game due to injury, Bragalone has come back strong with 194 yards and four touchdowns over his last two games, including a 102-yard effort at Wagner. He has moved into fourth place on Lehigh's career rushing list with 2,516 yards. Jermaine Pugh '04 is next at 2,674.
For the second time in three weeks, freshman wide receiver Jorge Portorreal was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week, after hauling in eight passes for 132 yards at Monmouth. Two weeks prior, Portorreal caught five passes for 99 yards and a touchdown against Yale. He now has 20 catches for 301 yards through five games and has also returned six kickoffs for 126 yards.
After suffering a season-ending injury in Lehigh's fifth game last season, senior defensive back Quentin Jones proved he has returned to form with a strong outing at Wagner. Jones matched a career-high with eight tackles and also broke up five passes at Wagner, becoming the first Mountain Hawk to break up five passes in a game since Abdul Byron and Matt Salvaterra both accomplished the feat in the 2001 Lehigh-Lafayette game. Jones has 16 tackles and six breakups on the season and is averaging 7.6 yards on seven punt returns.
Colgate enters Patriot League play at 2-3 overall. The Raiders won their opener at Cal Poly and after dropping three straight, rebounded with a win at Cornell last weekend. Colgate was picked third in the Patriot League Preseason Poll and features the league's preseason Defensive Player of the Year in defensive end Pat Afriyie, who returned to action last week after missing three games due to injury.
Freshman quarterback Grant Breneman was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week after passing for 119 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for a third score in the win at Cornell. Colgate averages a league-best 148.2 rushing yards, led by Alex Mathews, who has 287 yards and a touchdown in five games. Owen Rockett is the top receiver with 17 grabs for 199 yards and two touchdowns.
Lehigh meets Colgate for the 56th time with the Raiders holding a 29-24 lead. There have also been two ties. Lehigh has won five of the last seven meetings, but Colgate's wins in 2012 and 2015 clinched Patriot League titles for the Raiders. Andy Coen is 6-5 versus Colgate and 2-3 versus the Raiders at Andy Kerr Stadium.
Saturday's game kicks off just after 1:05 p.m. from Andy Kerr Stadium in Hamilton, N.Y. The game will be broadcast as a Stadium exclusive, with video available on the Patriot League Network. Audio coverage will be available on ESPN Radio of the Lehigh Valley (1230/1320/1160-AM) and ESPNLV.com beginning at noon.
