BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After participating in seven meets over the last eight weeks, the Lehigh men's cross country team is set to host the 2017 Patriot League Championships this Saturday at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. The Mountain Hawks have put together a string of solid performances throughout the regular season and feel they are in a good spot to make a run towards the top of the leaderboard.
The Mountain Hawks will be hosting the league championship meet for the eighth time since the founding the PL in 1990, tied for the most of any school. Lehigh has finished as high as third on three different occasions when hosting the championship meet.
Six teams from the Patriot League find themselves ranked in the latest USTFCCCA regional rankings, with Navy (4), Bucknell (7), American (9) and Lehigh (10) all ranked in the Mid-Atlantic, and Army West Point (4) and Boston U. (5) ranked in the Northeast.
The race will come on very familiar turf for the Mountain Hawks, who not only practice on their home course regularly, but also have hosted three meets so far this season. Lehigh placed second out of eight teams at the season-opening Lehigh Invitational on September 1, finishing just three points behind regionally ranked Rutgers, defeated Lafayette 16-47 in the school's annual dual meet, and placed 20th out of 40 teams in a very deep field that featured several nationally ranked teams in the Gold Race at the Paul Short Run. In between, the team finished eighth in another talented field at the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown and turned in a solid team effort at the Penn State National Open on Oct. 13.
Senior Patrick Reilly has emerged as Lehigh's frontrunner this season, leading the team in all five of his races this season, including the first two individual wins of his career at the Lehigh Invitational and the Lafayette dual meet. He ran the fastest time by a Lehigh male in school history on the 8K Goodman Campus Course (23:57.0) to finish 18th out of 359 at the Paul Short Run, and most recently placed seventh out of 128 runners at the Penn State National Open. Reilly has earned second team all-league honors with 14th place finishes at the PLC in each of the last two seasons.
Jeffrey Kirshenbaum has finished second on the team in all five of his races in a solid sophomore campaign, including a time of 24:30.8 (66th overall) at Paul Short, which currently ranks as the sixth-fastest time by a Lehigh runner on the 8K Goodman Course. Sophomore Victor Yegon has been a mainstay in Lehigh's top five this year, complete with an 8K PR of 24:52 at Paul Short. Freshman Brad DeMassa has earned a pair of PL Rookie of the Week honors this year for his performances at the Battle in Beantown and the Penn State National Open. Senior Ryan Grace has been a mainstay in the team's top seven as well this season, and senior John Tolbert set a new collegiate 8K PR at Paul Short (25:13.6).
At last year's league championships, Lehigh placed fourth in a hotly contested race where spots two-through-five were decided by just eight points. Navy took home four of the top six spots to win the team title with just 23 points, followed by Army (79), Boston U. (83), Lehigh (86) and Bucknell (87).
Saturday's men's race will begin at 11 a.m. and will be followed by the women at noon. Awards ceremonies for both races will take place inside Goodman Stadium following the conclusion of the women's race at approximately 12:45. The Mountain Hawks will also be honoring the 2012 men's cross country team in recognition of the five year anniversary of their Patriot League Championship title.
Lehigh will also be holding a dedication ceremony for the John and Carol Covert Track and Field Pavilion over at the Goodman Campus Track. The gathering will begin at 1:30, with the ceremony beginning at 2 p.m. Coach John Covert will be on hand, along with members of the Lehigh Athletics Partnership, VIPs, alums and fans. The dedication will mark the culmination of the many renovations and upgrades that have taken place at the complex since last spring.
