BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh men's basketball team looks to bounce back from a heartbreaking last-second loss to Loyola when it remains home and hosts American on Sunday. Opening tipoff in Stabler Arena is set for 2 p.m. The Mountain Hawks' unbeaten home mark ended on Thursday at the hands of a furious Greyhounds' rally late in the second half.
Â
Loyola overcome an 18-point halftime deficit to hand Lehigh its regular season first home defeat since a 69-64 loss vs. Navy last Jan. 20. Andre Walker helped lead the charge for the Greyhounds, scoring 16 second-half points, including a three-pointer with just 0.8 seconds remaining to give Loyola an 84-83 lead, which proved to be the final. It marked the second straight season that Walker hit a game-winning shot against the Mountain Hawks. In the third Patriot League game last season, he hit a shot with just 4.5 seconds remaining to give his team a 51-50 victory.Â
Â
Four Mountain Hawks finished with double-figure points, led by a season-high 23 from senior Austin Price. Price was 6-of-8 from three-point range while tallying a team-high three steals. Classmate Tim Kempton posted his eighth double-double of the season, finishing with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while junior Kahron Ross had 15 points, nine assists and two steals. Freshman Jordan Cohen, making his second-career start in place of sophomore Kyle Leufroy who was out due to illness, tallied 10 points and a career-high tying seven assists.
Â
On Thursday, Ross moved into sole possession of fourth place in school history for career assists, currently with 446. He is now within six of tying Scott Layer for third place. The Mountain Hawks shot 57.1 percent from the field (28-of-49), the seventh time this season Lehigh has shot 50 percent or more. After opening a 46-34 halftime lead, the Mountain Hawks were outscored 50-37 in the second. Eighteen turnovers hurt, but Lehigh helped force 18 Loyola turnovers as well. The loss marked Lehigh's fourth straight in Patriot League home openers.
Â
Sunday will be a rematch of last season's Patriot League Semifinals, a 78-62 Lehigh victory. The Mountain Hawks opened an 18-2 lead in the game and never looked back. Lehigh won all three games against the Eagles last season and will look to continue the success on Sunday, facing an American team in the midst of an up-and-down season.
Â
American enters Sunday's game with a 4-10 record and 1-2 mark in Patriot League play. The Eagles are coming off a 69-60 home loss to Bucknell Thursday which saw them open a halftime lead before the Bison outscored American 43-30 in the second half. Freshman Sa'eed Nelson leads the team in scoring, averaging 16.5 points per game (which is fourth in the Patriot League) while fellow rookie Mark Gasperini averages 11.9 per game and preseason All-League honoree Delante Jones comes in at 11.6 per contest. Gasperini leads the team in rebounding (4.9 average) while Nelson and Charlie Jones are tied for the team lead in assists with 32.
