BETHLEHEM, Pa. – A career-best passing day propelled Lehigh senior quarterback Nick Shafnisky to both league and national recognition Monday. After establishing career-highs in completions and passing yards and matching his career high for touchdown passes in Lehigh's 42-28 win over Princeton, Shafnisky repeated as Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week and also garnered National FCS Offensive Player of the Week Honors from STATS.
Shafnisky completed 81 percent of his passes, going 29-for-36 against the Tigers for 461 yards and four touchdowns. The 461 yards marked the third highest single-game total in Lehigh history, coming in just 19 yards shy of the record set by Scott Semptimphelter against Lafayette in 1992. Shafnisky spread the ball around to six different receivers, mixing his four touchdowns across three Lehigh wideouts. He posted his second consecutive 300-plus yard passing game and the sixth of his career.
As a team, Lehigh's 464 passing yards marked the fourth-highest single game total in school history.
The performance against Princeton came one week after accounting for 388 yards of offense and six touchdowns in Lehigh's 49-28 win at Penn. Lehigh's No. 2 rusher on the season, Shafnisky was limited to just 14 yards against the Tigers but had a season-long 16 yard rush.
For the season, Shafnisky leads the FCS in completion percentage at 72.7 percent. He has thrown for 1,183 yards with nine touchdown passes compared to three interceptions. He has also rushed for 138 yards and a team-leading five touchdowns.
The Whitehall, Pa., product is the first Patriot League football student-athlete to gain two weekly awards this season.
Also on Monday, senior linebacker Colton Caslow garnered honorable mention recognition after doing a little bit of everything for the Lehigh defense. Caslow led the Mountain Hawks with seven tackles and notched Lehigh's only sack to go along with a forced fumble and his first career interception, which halted a Princeton drive in the third quarter when the Tigers were moving in for a potential tying score. Caslow's interception was the second of Lehigh's three picks on the day.
The Mountain Hawks travel to Yale on Saturday for their final non-league game of the regular season. Game time is set for 1:30 from the Yale Bowl in New Haven, Conn. The game will be televised on One World Sports and streamed on the subscription-based Ivy League Digital Network, while audio coverage will be available on ESPN Radio of the Lehigh Valley (1230/1320/1160-AM) and ESPNLV.com.
